Fraternity honors stellar students

Acacia fraternity held its Fall 2001 Achievement and Recognition Banquet to honor pledges, active members and alumni Sunday. The banquet, located at the Acacia house at 702 E. Third St., gave out lifetime service awards, as well as academic awards based on the accomplishments of last year's spring semester.\nThe banquet is a way to show the positive aspects of being involved in a fraternity, Acacia president and junior Matt Cairns said. \n"It's nice to see some of the good things that are going on," Cairns said.\nPhil Zook and Hal Hanes, members of the Indiana Chapter Building Corporation, received the Award of Merit, the highest honor Acacia can give, recognizing outstanding service to the fraternity. The Order of Pythagoras, the second highest honor Acacia can give, was given to James W. Sutton, member of the Indiana Chapter of Building Corporations, and senior Pat McGovern, former president of Acacia.\nAwards were also based on academic performance, ranging from "Highest Active grade point average" to the Arthur D. Lautzenheiser Scholarship, awarded to a senior member who shows service, humility, loyalty and kindness. Awards ranged from $250 to $3,500.\nWinning an award is an honor, said junior Joey Mackey, recipient of the "Highest Active GPA" and "Most Consistent GPA" awards.\n"It's really rewarding that the alumni put so much into this," Mackey said.\nRichard McKaig, dean of students, also spoke of the importance of fraternities at IU.\n"At the core of fraternity is basically friendship," McKaig said. "That concept is not likely to go out of date in my lifetime."• Highest Junior GPA -- senior Blake Scott.
