Rachel Levy was in the wrong place at the wrong time. On Friday, March 29, Levy wanted to buy groceries for a Passover dinner. Instead of going to the local convenience store, she opted to go to the grocery store, where she would unknowingly walk through the door and brush against a female suicide bomber.

Apartments need recycling

Of the 18,000 off-campus students at IUB, most are unable to recycle without going out of their way to haul their sorted recycling to a facility south of Bloomington. But that is hardly an easy task. Apartment dwellers have to store recyclables somewhere in their apartment, sort them (right down to colors of glass bottles), load them in the car and drive to 3400 Old State Road 37 South. Once there, a number of helpful workers are usually at the ready to unload your recycling with you -- thanks to court-mandated community service.

Pope summons U.S. cardinals following sex scandals

ROME -- Pope John Paul II has summoned American cardinals to the Vatican for an extraordinary meeting to talk about sex abuse scandals in the U.S. church. The talks will take place early next week, a senior Vatican official said Monday. The official said the cardinals would meet with some Vatican officials as well as the pope.

Stock market may affect charity donation

INDIANAPOLIS -- Downturns in the stock market last year could result in less money for some Indiana charities because foundations and endowments suffered losses on their investments. While experts say that over time the stock market is a fairly stable asset for foundations, some were hurt enough by market dips last fall that they might have to reduce their grant-giving this year or next year.

Man accused in anthrax mailing

CINCINNATI -- Jury selection started Monday for a man accused of mailing fake anthrax letters to abortion clinics nationwide and robbing banks in two states. Clayton Lee Waagner, 45, is representing himself for his Cincinnati trial on federal firearms and stolen car charges, but did not speak in court Monday as the judge questioned a pool of 60 potential jurors.

Inventions increase revenue

For the past five years, ARTI, IU's Advanced Research Technology Institute, has been developing, licensing and patenting products developed by IU researchers. The University is finally enjoying the fruits of their labor. IU's licensing income for the past five years has grown steadily since the establishment of ARTI in 1997, reaching a peak in 2001 of over $4 million, while the licensing revenue increased by approximately $2 million between 1999 and 2001.

Digital library brings collections, archives online

Hoosiers drop weekend games

The IU men's tennis team can't seem to put it all together. They are fighting, but to no avail. Despite a full lineup, the Hoosiers lost 6-1 to No.19 Ohio State on Saturday and then to Penn State 4-3 on Sunday.

Big Ten split

The IU women's tennis team split its two matches over the weekend against Big Ten foes at home. The team toppled Penn State by a score of 5-2 but fell to Ohio State 4-3 in a closely contested match. The weekend left IU with a 4-4 record in conference and a 15-7 mark overall.

Rain cuts tournament short

Torrential rain Saturday night and Sunday morning led officials to cancel the third round of the Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio. With the results from the first two rounds standing up as the final results, the Hoosiers ended the tournament tied for sixth place with Auburn with a two round score of 592. UNLV won the tournament with a score of 576 (288-288).

IU, Michigan dominate

Four Hoosiers cracked the individual top 10 at the Hawkeye Invitational, but it wasn't enough to overcome the dominating play of Michigan. IU finished in second place with a 903 team score, 15 strokes out of first. It is the fifth time this year and second time in two weeks that Michigan has won a tournament in which IU competed.

Team takes two of four split against Spartans

The Hoosiers came away with a much-needed split in their first away series in Big Ten competition. IU (26-7, 8-4 Big Ten) swept the double header Saturday against Michigan State (22-8, 6-5) behind dominating pitching and defense.

Falling back

At 0-12 in the Big Ten, the IU softball team is off to its worst start in school history to begin conference play. Illinois (25-16, 5-5 Big Ten) and rival Purdue (31-16, 2-6) both swept the Hoosiers in a two-game series over the weekend.

Speaker addresses greek pride, life

A sea of greek letters faced Will Keim as he delivered a lecture Thursday night at Assembly Hall. Keim, a motivational speaker and alumnus of Delta Upsilon fraternity, addressed the members of IU's greek system about the pride and responsibility associated with fraternity and sorority life.

Students recognized for work

The IU Student Employment Office recognized student workers both on and off-campus last week with its annual Student Employment Awareness Week. The week was intended to increase public recognition of student employment by recognizing and thanking both students who work and their employers for providing them with job opportunities. Although Student Employment Awareness Week started about 15 years ago, it wasn't nationally recognized until 1990.

We want the folk

Folk music, despite what its detractors might have said in the past, has managed to survive, and Peter, Paul and Mary are among the proof of this. Their show at the IU Auditorium Friday night was an enjoyable experience on the whole, and showed that even after 40-odd years, folk music still can draw a crowd.
