Punk can be a very limited music form. Very few punk bands are able to expand their sound and style very far. Those punk groups that do manage to transcend the genre end up creating a whole now identity for themselves. The Clash, for example, evolved from a straight-ahead, angry-Brit punk combo into a funky, cutting-edge dance band. And like other punks, the guys of Green Day are really trapped inside a musical straitjacket.

After nearly three weeks of controversy, the IU Student Association election is finally over. Campaigning with the slogan "work hard, play hard," the Kirkwood ticket emerged as the winning ticket. Joe Walterman, Elections Commissioner, said six of the 11 Supreme Court justices have certified the following vote count: 3,184 for Kirkwood, 2,030 for Synergy and 2,000 for Steel.

Jeffries explodes for career high

With 6 minutes, 41 seconds remaining in IU's home opener against Notre Dame Tuesday, Jared Jeffries picked up his fourth foul. IU led by five, and it appeared Jeffries would retreat to the Hoosier bench. He didn't. He knew he wouldn't. And it's a good thing. Jeffries' career-high 28 points, including five during a two-minute stretch, helped IU (5-2) fend off the Fighting Irish (7-1) for a 76-75 victory that jump-started the hearts of an Assembly Hall sellout crowd of 17,456. "I knew coach wasn't going to take me out," Jeffries said. "I know he has confidence in me and how smart I am out on the court." Jeffries was just that, with IU holding a 63-58 edge.

Hoosiers look to defeat Spartans

All year, football coach Cam Cameron has talked about the importance of being a mistake-free team. Now, it's crucial. Saturday, the Hoosiers (2-5, 2-3), fresh off an emotional win against No. 13 Michigan, travel to East Lansing to face the No. 23 Michigan State Spartans. In the 26-24 win against the Wolverines, MSU was given 76 yards from Wolverine penalties, which Spartan head coach Bobby Williams described as "huge."

Exhibit features historic fliers

Students see fliers on kiosks around campus or in store windows, and may never think anything of them. But to many people, promotional fliers for local rock bands are a fine art. Eric Weddle, a local aficionado of Bloomington's musical history, has collected some of those fliers for a gallery exhibit at the John Waldron Arts Center. He's calling it "Post No Bills," and through it he said he hopes to share his enthusiasm for the music of Bloomington's past and present. "There's so much history here," said Weddle of the fliers he's collected for the show.

Straight No Chaser alumni team up with RCA Records

In September 1996, Daniel Ponce worked with a few other students to assemble a group of guys with one mission in mind: to form a men's singing ensemble that would put the Hoosiers on the a cappella map. "I looked around at other universities and saw many a cappella groups," Ponce said. "Then when I came to IU, I noticed that they did not have any a cappella groups, and I wanted to do something about that."
