Freshmen take a lesson in 'Spirit and Traditions' of IU pride

Saturday's home-openers for the men's football and soccer teams were two more reasons to bring freshmen together to learn about the spirit of IU athletics. Just hours before IU's football bout with William and Mary, white and red clad students headed to Assembly Hall for "Spirit and Traditions 2002," to get pumped for another year of collegiate sports competition. Students were given free noisemakers and were taught the cheers and cries of their new home away from home. The Office of Orientation Programs, the IU Athletic Department and Residential Programs and Services sponsored the event.

Festival opens eyes to campus opportunities

Socializing, free food, thumping music, bright green balloons -- and careers? That's what one could find at the Career Development Center's annual Career Fest on Friday. The corner of 10th Street and Jordan Avenue was one big celebration all in the name of directing students on the right career paths.

All the boys in the lounge

Due to overcrowded residence halls and a lack of housing cancellations, 38 students have been designated to live in lounges -- all of them male. Becky Kehrberg, who works assignments for Residential Programs Services, said males, statistically, are usually the latest applicants and therefore receive last priority for housing.

GOP pushes for gains

WASHINGTON -- The Republican Party chairman said the GOP is fighting "the tide of history" in trying to make gains in the November elections, as he and his Democratic counterpart previewed an acrid home stretch by trading bitter accusations on Bush administration policies.

Mideast violence continues

JERUSALEM -- Israeli soldiers, saying they had been warned of an attack, shot and killed four Palestinians near a Jewish settlement's vineyard in the West Bank on Sunday. The shootings brought the weekend Palestinian death toll to 12, including two children and several other civilians.

Florida tests for virus

MIAMI -- Health officials said Sunday they were testing a transplant patient who received an organ from a Georgia donor for West Nile virus, after the recipient of a heart from the same donor was diagnosed with the disease.

Keep cloning legal

In July of last year, the House of Representatives passed the Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2001. The ban would criminalize human cloning, providing up to ten years in prison and a one million dollar fine for violators. Senator Brownback (R-Kan.) drafted a similar version of the bill for debate within the Democrat-controlled Senate, where there is considerably more opposition. In response to growing pressure to bring the issue to resolution, President Bush created the President's Council on Bioethics last November to further research the prospect of human cloning. Yet Bush has made his position on the issue clear; he believes all forms of human cloning should be banned, and supports the Prohibition Act passed by the House.

Lugar urges caution on Iraq

WASHINGTON -- A leading Republican lawmaker urged President Bush on Sunday to underpin any military action against Iraq with resolutions from the United Nations, demanding that weapons inspectors be allowed to return, and from Congress, giving its approval for action.

I noted, with a mixture of surprise and chagrin, the recent analysis conducted by some organization called the Princeton Review (obviously trading off the prestige of the Princeton name but having no affiliation with Princeton University) which said IU was now the new No. 1 party school in the country. Strike — over and out!

Dating back to 1970, Major League Baseball owners and players have ended all of their labor negotiations in one of two ways -- either with a lockout or a strike... until now. On Friday, representatives of the players association and the owners kept the fans as their top priority, reaching a four-year long labor agreement just hours before players were set to go on the ninth strike in the history of the sport.

Culture on display

Invigorating and lively music showcasing everything from swing dancing, belly dancing and bongo-playing echoed throughout the IU campus late Thursday afternoon as the flavorful aroma of chicken, popcorn, rice, egg rolls and even tiramisu filled the air around Showalter Fountain.

Two vehicles sought in Behrman disappearance

Investigators said Friday they were looking for the drivers and passengers of two vehicles who might have information about missing IU student Jill Behrman. FBI agent Gary Dunn said investigators continue to believe that Jill Behrman was hit by a pickup truck, driven by someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs, while she was riding her bike near Bloomington on May 31, 2000 and that her body was dumped in southern Monroe County's Salt Creek.

Chancellor joins local arts board

The Bloomington Area Arts Council (BAAC) announced Thursday that IU Chancellor Sharon Brehm was appointed to a two year term on the BAAC's Board of Trustees.

IUSA buys Corvette to encourage voting

For one lucky student, democracy will come with horsepower -- lots of it. The IU Student Association will spend $61,000 on a Corvette to encourage IU students to vote in November's general election. With Project Vote Hard, IUSA hopes to help achieve a stronger voice for the University in the state's General Assembly by increasing the number of registered voters in Monroe County. Students who can prove they voted will be entered in a drawing for the sports car.

Strike: Out

NEW YORK -- After a round of all-night negotiations, baseball players and owners reached a tentative agreement on a labor contract that averted a strike threatened for later Friday. "There is no strike," said Atlanta pitcher Tom Glavine, the National League player representative.

DiNardo era begins

At 4 p.m. this Saturday at Memorial Stadium, the Gerry DiNardo era of Indiana football kicks off. After all the spring practices, the workouts in the sweltering summer heat, and the two-a-days in the fall, it all comes down to this. But this year's Hoosier football team may look nothing like the Hoosier teams of the past couple of years. And with free admission to the game for students this weekend, the contest will offer many fans a chance to check-out the new-look Hoosiers. Gone is head coach Cam Cameron and the 18-37 record during his tenure. Enter DiNardo who brings with him the knowledge of rebuilding programs as he did with Louisiana State. Gone is the backfield of Antwaan Randel-El and Levron Williams. Enter in the unproven starters, senior Tommy Jones at quarterback and junior Brian Lewis at running back.

Afro-American Studies gets new direction, name

The former department of Afro-American Studies is heading toward a new direction with the appointment of Dr. John Stanfield II as chairman of the department. That new direction includes an early and bold move by Stanfield, changing the department's name to the Department of African-American and African Diaspora Studies.
