IU file sharers threatened by entertainment industry

IU students who download music and movies from the Internet are increasingly being threatened in record numbers by the entertainment industry. Since the beginning of April, the Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Artists of America have sent 261 notices to IU complaining of possible copyright violations.

No Little 500 concert

This year's Little 500 revelers will have one less entertainment option than in years past. The trike race was canceled in February, and now Union Board will not be holding its traditional Little 500 concert.

IU to honor civil rights leader today

The University will honor the 30 year career of Dr. Herman C. Hudson at a memorial service at 1 p.m. today in the Ruth N. Halls Theatre. Few individuals have made a more powerful impact on the academic environment of IU than Hudson, founder of IU's Department of Afro-American Studies and Afro-American Arts Institute. Hudson died Feb. 17 in his home in Southfield, Mich. He had just turned 80.

SARS advice mailed

University administrators and state health officials are trying to make sure Indiana residents stay calm as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome spreads across the globe. On April 8, the Indiana Health Department announced the first suspected SARS case in Indiana. The patient in question was admitted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis on Monday April 7.

Student arrested for child porn

IU sophomore Galen Baughman was arrested earlier this month in his Henderson Street apartment by the District Attorney's office of Westchester, N.Y., for multiple charges of child pornography.

The top commander of U.S. forces in Iraq briefed President Bush on the war from inside one of Saddam Hussein's ornate palaces Wednesday, underscoring the death of the old regime. At home, the administration reduced the terrorist threat a notch, from orange to yellow.

IU splits games, ends losing streak

The IU softball team came into Wednesday's double-header with an 0-10 Big Ten record and an eight-game skid with six of those games going by two runs or less. Luckily for the Hoosiers, the Kentucky Wildcats came into Bloomington with an eight-game slide of their own. Each team was able to break both of their losing streaks Wednesday with Kentucky winning the first game 9-5, and IU taking the second contest 4-2. The second game had a very interesting ending.

Unnecessary roughness shouldn't come from the stands

It takes an extremely outrageous activity to really appall me, especially when the act involves sports. I will admit that I often give the benefit of the doubt to any athlete, coach and even fan for the most part when they do something in the scope of sports which would be shunned in most other aspects of society.

Tran steps up to No.1 Big Ten spot

Junior women's tennis player Linda Tran made it her goal before coming to college to play in the No. 1 spot at a Division I university by her junior year. Tran has accomplished that goal by starting in the No. 1 singles and doubles spots this year for the Hoosiers.

IU's women's golf team has ascended to one of the elite programs in Big Ten history, and the Hoosier program has known only one coach in its 22 year existence.

Going into the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Eastern Division Championships, the Hoosier water polo team does not need much motivation, as it will get another and perhaps last chance of the season to beat rival Michigan.

Hip-hop dance group performs last show of the season

IU Essence will be performing for the last time this school year at the Black Student Union's fashion show at 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. The dance team performs at different venues throughout the school year, the most recent being the Faculty and Staff for Student Excellence Mentoring Program's annual banquet and awards ceremony.

School halts transfers

Beginning next fall, the Kelley School of Business will no longer accept transferred credits for courses taken at any two-year schools for most 200-level required courses, including A201, A202, L201, K201, X204 and business statistics courses.

'No skateboarding' signs scare away skaters

Spring time has rolled around and with it brings sun, shorts and skateboards. In response to the increased number of skateboarders, IU Physical Plant has installed new signs warning skateboarders to keep off IU property.
