Scholarships scarce for team

·

In the 2004-05 school year, Ball State University will no longer have a men's cross country or track team. The school announced it would be cutting both of these athletic programs this past summer. For many athletes, this will be the end of their collegiate athletic career and an unfortunate ending for many who are dedicated to the sport.

Cub fans' 2,004-step program

·

Please excuse some Cubs fans if they are not whole-hearted in their "Wait 'til next year" exhortations. The Cubs have made the playoffs now four times in the last 19 years, and while the glory was fun, the aftermath was painful. While some teams laid the groundwork for a dynasty, the Cubs' groundwork met the drill hammer.

IU Soul Revue to play at Bear's Place

·

IU Soul Revue is set to perform two concerts at 8 and 9:15 p.m. today at Bear's Place, 1316 E. Third St., for the first time in about three years. Soul Revue is known for its interesting mix of R&B and soul music. Some members of the group sing and others play instruments. "I'd describe Soul Revue as an R&B and soul group dedicated to preserving old-school soul African- American music," said Jacob Hughes, a singer in the group. Soul Revue began in 1971 as a class to help enlighten students on the topic of African-American music. The group was first directed by professor Portia K. Maultsby. Soul Revue was the first music group within the African American Arts Institute. "Actually all of the AAAI performance groups, African American Choral Ensemble, and African American Dance Company, for example originated from Soul Revue," Hughes said.

Yankees wait out rain to take 2-1 Series lead

·

MIAMI -- For the longest time, this had all the makings of another heartbreaker for Mike Mussina. Down early. Hardly any run support. A rainy night. And yet somehow, the ace who could never quite win these games won Game 3 of the World Series. Mussina outpitched young ace Josh Beckett and the New York Yankees broke it open late, beating the Florida Marlins 6-1 Tuesday night for a 2-1 edge. Derek Jeter doubled and scored the go-ahead run on Hideki Matsui's single in the eighth inning, then Bernie Williams hit his record 19th postseason homer to clinch it in the ninth. By then, Mussina's work was done. Mariano Rivera finished it off in rapid fashion, closing with two innings as the Yankees won before a crowd of 65,731 that had mostly left by the final out. Now, after their second consecutive victory, the Yankees will try to take firm hold of the Series behind Roger Clemens.

Partial birth abortion ban passed

·

WASHINGTON -- The Senate voted Tuesday to ban the practice that critics call partial birth abortion, sending President Bush a measure that supporters and foes alike said could alter the future of U.S. abortion rights. A court challenge is certain. Years in the making, the bill imposes the most far-reaching limits on abortion since the Supreme Court confirmed a woman's right to end a pregnancy in 1973.

Purdue ahead of IU in 7th Blood Donor Challenge

·

IU and Purdue University are going head-to-head again, and this time they're out for blood. But instead of clashing over football or basketball, these universities are competing for who can donate the most blood in the seventh annual Blood Donor Challenge. The blood drive, which started Oct. 13 and runs through Nov. 14, is sponsored by both schools' alumni associations and collects blood for local hospitals. Currently, Purdue is beating IU in the blood battle, raising 990 pints to date compared to 661 pints from IU. The winner will be announced at the football game against Purdue on Nov. 22 at IU. Whoever collects the most blood receives a trophy. "We need to pick up the pace," said John Hobson, senior vice president of the IU Alumni Association. "There is still plenty of time left."

Taking off our masks

All Hallow's Eve quickly approaches: the season of spooks and ghosts. It's the holiday we enjoy collecting bags full of free candy, given to us from strangers, yet fear to consume under the slight apprehension that poison or surgical needles are within their sweet centers.

Lead us in leotards

·

As weight problems continue to pose a growing threat to the health of American citizens, scholars continue to list as many complex factors that contribute to the problem as the consequences of it. We point to poor eating habits and the trend of growing portion sizes, and we blame the technology-based pastimes that propagate our sedentary lifestyles. The surgeon general has warned us of the medical trouble we will face if we don't address the problem.

Get over it: let them vote

·

Not even Bono can get college students out to vote. We just don't care, or we're just too busy, or we just don't pay enough attention. So it seems, for politicians across the board, new methods for making voting convenient for students is a goal that should be universally pushed.
