Men inching women out of country music awards

·

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The nominees for next week's country music awards are a bit more old school than some predecessors and a lot more brawny. For the first time in some 20 years, male singers took all five slots in both the entertainer of the year and newcomer categories.

You aren't what you wear

·

I was having a phone conversation with a friend the other day. We were bouncing ideas off each other, and he came up with a theory I did not agree with. He said "Scarface" and "The Godfather" have influenced fashion. "Look around," he said. "Everyone wants to be a thug and wear their suits like the ones in the 'Scarface' and 'The Godfather.'"

California wildfires affect Hoosiers

·

The Southern California wildfires made their journey to Indiana this weekend not by flame, but by flight. IU student travelers were stuck in airports across the country as smoke and quick-spreading fires raged from San Diego to San Bernardino, Calif. Many planes arriving and departing from area airports were not allowed to continue their flight paths, thus causing air traffic delays in other areas of the country.

LoVecchio to start at Minn.

·

There will be no quarterback controversy on the IU football team. Not this week, anyway. When asked at his weekly press conference Tuesday if backup quarterback Graeme McFarland might get into a series of downs in IU's game at Minnesota Saturday, coach Gerry DiNardo was clear and direct.

Youngsters get chance to play in Memorial Stadium

·

Monroe County Youth Football competed in a new venue Monday as the American Football League played its championship game at the IU Memorial Stadium. Receiver hauls in record

·

Walking across the Memorial Stadium field on game days brings back memories for Courtney Roby. The junior wide receiver remembers coming to IU regularly when he was seven years old to see his uncle -- former IU wideout Rob Turner -- play on Saturdays.

Road trips take team down south

·

The men's swimming and diving team begins a string of four road meets when they square off today against Kentucky, and then head to Tennessee to face the Volunteers Saturday. The Hoosiers are coming off an impressive 164-116 home victory against Evansville to open up the season, but are weary of the tougher competition the Kentucky and Tennessee squads hold for them.

Bowden down to the master?

·

Florida State's 48-24 win over Wake Forest Saturday was both ordinary and extraordinary. It was ordinary in that once again, the Seminoles routed an outmanned ACC opponent. It was extraordinary in that Bobby Bowden became the all-time winningest coach in Division I-A college football history with victory No. 339. Bowden passed Penn State's Joe Paterno, whose team lost at Iowa. Paterno is also active, although with the way Penn State has played this season, calling Paterno "active" is somewhat like calling Ted Williams active. Or Pope John Paul II.

Casino waiting for vote

·

By Nov. 4, Indiana's 11th casino could be approved for construction in Orange County. Approval for the riverboat casino, which includes the towns of French Lick, Orleans, Paoli and West Baden Springs, is set to be located between French Lick and West Baden. A referendum is pending on whether a gambling establishment should be placed there. French Lick and West Baden, famous for their picturesque scenery and historic hotels, are deeply divided over the establishment of a new riverboat gambling hall. The economically-struggling county has been polarized over the pending construction of the casino that would be docked between two hotels struggling for solid business.

A flurry of furry tails

·

You're walking to class, enjoying IU's colorful fall foliage, when out of nowhere a cluster of acorns falls from above. A furry tail flickers as it jets down the tree trunk and a frantic brown fox squirrel begins to dig for more seeds and nuts beneath a blanket of fallen leaves. This scene is commonplace on IU's wooded campus, where many squirrels make their home. Michele Risinger, a first-year graduate student, said she has experienced this situation before.
