Set design professor retires after years of service to University

After 24 years of teaching and creating set design for IU's Theatre and Drama Department, professor Wes Peters took his final curtain call with this weekend's production of "Romeo and Juliet." Peters, who will be retiring in December, announced the colorful set he created for the play will be his last.

Herbert selects Gros Louis

Former IU-Bloomington Chancellor Ken Gros Louis could have relaxed this coming winter in Santa Barbara, Calif. Instead, he will be back in Bloomington, serving in his old post. IU President Adam Herbert announced Friday he is recommending Gros Louis serve as interim chancellor beginning Jan. 1.

Local band won't play 'Thriller' in parade

NEW YORK -- Bloomington High School North's marching band reportedly decided not to play Michael Jackson's "Thriller" as part of its routine for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade because of the child molestation charges against the pop superstar.

Downtown to illuminate Friday

Downtown Bloomington will come alive with 25 miles of white lights and family activities during the Canopy of Lights Festival Friday. The annual event is sponsored by the Downtown Bloomington Commission and several other community organizations. Bloomington residents will count down together at 7 p.m. as a Bloomington Fire Department firefighter dressed as Santa Claus turns on the canopy to light up downtown. The lights will remain on until Jan. 10.

2 U.S. soldiers dragged through Iraqi streets

MOSUL, Iraq -- Iraqi teenagers dragged the bloody bodies of two American soldiers from a wrecked vehicle and pummeled them with concrete blocks Sunday, witnesses said, describing a burst of savagery in a city once safe for Americans. Another soldier was killed by a bomb and a U.S.-allied police chief was assassinated.

Lawmakers say Kernan can handle budget problems

INDIANAPOLIS -- Legislative leaders say they have no plans to address Indiana's budget deficit in the current special session devoted to property taxes or when they return to the Statehouse in January, preferring to leave the issue to Gov. Joe Kernan.

Former ambassador addresses U.S. relations

Former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Donald Gregg offered insight to U.S. relations with North Korea over the past decade and expressed his discontent with the current Bush administration in a speech delivered to the Bloomington community Wednesday. Gregg, also the former national security adviser to then-Vice President George H. W. Bush from 1982 to 1989, delivered his speech to a packed audience at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave., Wednesday evening.

'Falstaff' executed hilariously

Excepting the premiere of a new work, it is the accepted task of the critic to express his or her view on the performance of a work and not the work itself. But in the case of "Falstaff," Giuseppe Verdi's last opera, this limitation is difficult to abide by, for throughout the opera, it was the sheer buoyancy and brilliance of the music that left a lasting impression.

Parents resolve fraternity lawsuit

The parents of an IU sophomore who died almost three years ago from injuries he suffered at a Theta Chi rush party have settled a lawsuit they filed against the fraternity. A jury trial had been scheduled for Nov. 17 in the U.S. District Court of Southern Indiana, but at the last minute, attorneys scheduled a settlement conference for Wednesday.

IU returns home to face Illini, Wildcats

After splitting a two-game road trip to Iowa and Minnesota, the Hoosiers come back home to face Illinois and Northwestern this weekend. IU currently sports an 11-16 overall record, going 4-12 in the Big Ten.
