'Hoosier Millionaire' winner killed in accident after show

ELWOOD -- A man who announced plans to buy a car with his $57,000 in winnings from a televised lottery game show was run over by a pickup truck and killed a few hours later while he walked to the grocery store that had sold him the winning ticket. Carl D. Atwood, 73, was knocked to the ground and suffered a head injury in the accident late Thursday near his home in Elwood, about 40 miles northeast of Indianapolis, police said. He died later at an Indianapolis hospital.

Proposed bill would cap yearly tuition increases

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana's state-funded universities are criticizing a legislative proposal aimed at blocking sharp jumps in tuition, saying the bill could actually lead to higher instruction costs to students. The bill would allow tuition increases for every freshman class, but returning students would not face a tuition hike of more than 3 percent.

After three years of collecting data, analyzing and designing, the Monroe County Racial Justice Task Force received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award Jan. 19 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. New legislation aids cancer patients

Bloomington resident Arletha Dabney doesn't like the term cancer survivor and plans to make her view known tomorrow at the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Celebration at the Indiana Statehouse. "I'm not a survivor," Dabney said. "I'm a conqueror."

People jump from windows to flee motel fire

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Fire broke out in a five-story motel early Sunday while guests were asleep, killing six and forcing others to leap from windows or climb down bed sheets to safety, authorities said. At least a dozen people were injured, including at least five in critical condition at a burn unit in Augusta, Ga. Guests and authorities said smoke filled the motel quickly, sending guests in their pajamas into a chaotic scramble for the exits and a cold rain outside.

U.S. soldier dies of injuries in Iraq

TIKRIT, Iraq -- A U.S. helicopter crashed in the Tigris river while searching for a missing soldier on Sunday, and the aircraft's two crew members were missing, the military said. It did not say what caused the crash of the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter, attached to the 101st Airborne Division.
