Around The World

·

Green rejects Nader endorsement MILWAUKEE -- The Green Party nominated Texas attorney David Cobb as its candidate for president Saturday, rejecting Ralph Nader's efforts to secure the party's formal endorsement and likely access to the ballot in key states like Wisconsin and California. Nader, the party's candidate in 1996 and 2000, had told Green officials months ago he would not accept the party's nomination for president, preferring to build a coalition of third-party groups and independents rather than running under one banner.

·

Ahhh, the joys of summer. Sun, pools, short shorts (not on me), warm nights, excessive lounging and, of course, barbecue -- that pit of fire and smoke that has sustained people around the world for thousands of years. Taliban fighters try to disrupt elections

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- Taliban fighters killed up to 16 men after learning they had registered for Afghanistan's U.S.-backed national elections, the deadliest attack yet in a campaign aimed at sabotaging the nation's first free vote, officials said Sunday. The assault raised security fears and added to doubts over whether Afghanistan is ready to hold elections as planned in September -- and increased pressure on NATO leaders meeting Monday in Turkey to deploy more peacekeepers here.

President Playboy

·

President of the United States is a title I used to associate with some old man sitting at a desk. Oh, how things change. As I have become older and wiser and presidents have become a little friskier, I now see a president as an old man with a hot chick sitting on him, or under his desk.

Students distracted by construction

Within the cordoned fence that rings the construction site of Simon Hall near Third Street, construction workers can be seen and heard excavating in preparation for laying the foundation for the new building. In nearby classrooms, instructors and students have expressed concern at the level of noise eminating from the site. Yamina Mermer, an Arabic language instructor, teaches a class on the first floor of Ballantine Hall, which is adjacent to the construction site.

·

Before I talk about coolness, we should clear things up. I am not cool. I am, in fact, a nerd.

When I informed a friend of mine that the first Beastie Boys album in six years was to be released this month, I was shocked and appalled by his instant response.

A WRITER'S LIFE

·

Bloomington may have a bumping music scene, but it also hosts a lively writing community driven by academia and plenty of creative people willing to write down their thoughts through various facets of literati.
