"The Bourne Supremacy" picks up where "The Bourne Identity" left off -- both are action flicks in which brains best brawn. Based on a series of novels by late author Robert Ludlum, these two movies have infused the languishing spy genre with grit, intelligence and style -- elements long-since bungled by the Bond franchise.

Cast prepares for premier of classic 'Tosca' Friday

For the second of its summer productions, the IU Opera Theater will present Giacomo Puccini's fifth operatic masterpiece "Tosca" this weekend. The famous piece, set in 1796, the year Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Italy, tells the story of opera singer Floria Tosca, who is pursued by the feared and antiquated chief of police Barone Scarpia. Meanwhile, she is utterly devoted to painter and revolutionary Mario Cavarodossi. The opera is a dramatic tale of entangled love, jealousy and the betrayal of lovers by tyrants in power.

Police investigate local garage fire

A fire on Indiana Avenue Friday night, about 50 feet from the site of a fatal blaze in late May, caused damage to a garage and nearby utility pole. No one was injured. The incident is being investigated by the Bloomington Police Department. The BPD has not released information about the incident. A report by the Bloomington Fire Department Shift Inspector Brent Stanton said a gas can was found a block away from the scene and has been turned over to the BPD for fingerprint analysis.

2004 class gives team new depth

Coming off a year in which the Hoosiers finished the season 12-12, with six of those losses recorded by a narrow 4-3 margin, the IU coaching staff needed to add depth with the 2004 recruiting class. IU coach Ken Hydinger achieved that by adding highly touted recruits Michael McCarthy and Dara McLoughlin to a team that will return for the 2004 season completely intact.

Prosecution alleges recklessness in 6- year-old's death VALPARAISO -- Prosecutors contend a 6-year-old girl died just after she stepped off a school bus because of the recklessness of a motorcyclist, while his defense attorney says it was an accident caused by bright sunlight. The trial of Michael L. Hineline, 37, of Westville began Tuesday. Hineline faces felony counts of reckless homicide and criminal recklessness and a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. If convicted, he faces two to 11 years in prison.

Colleges, students adapt in response to RIAA lawsuits

Like so many of his peers, Rusty Tracey fell in love with file sharing when Napster debuted. And, like so many others, Tracey, who is a student at Washington State Community College in Marietta, Ohio, wandered from program to program when the pioneering software crumbled amid legal difficulty. Now, with students and citizens alike being sued by the Recording Industry Association of America for the act, Tracey isn't buckling. He's just finding new ways to build his rather extensive collection of MP3s.

IDS publisher to be given award

Adjunct journalism professor and Indiana Daily Student publisher David Adams will be honored with the Educator of the Year award by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Aug. 5. The award, given annually by the Scholastic Journalism Division of the AEJMC, will be given at the organization's conference in Toronto, Ontario.

Suspect apprehended in robbery, kidnapping

The lone suspect in the robbery and kidnapping of an IU student was apprehended Friday after calling police and claiming he was actually the victim. The Bloomington Police Department said they believe 20-year-old IU-Purdue University Indianapolis student Jared Bailey held up a 29-year-old IU-Bloomington graduate student at knifepoint. Bailey will soon face felony charges for the attack and already has pending charges of felony burglary and battery from a separate incident.

Statue honoring Bob Newhart dedicated in Chicago

CHICAGO -- "Hi Bob!" could become a popular phrase on Michigan Avenue. A statue commemorating comedian Bob Newhart's role as Dr. Robert Hartley on "The Bob Newhart Show" was unveiled Tuesday in downtown Chicago near the office building shown in the TV classic's opening credits.

On a good day, a welcoming garden

In what is sometimes an overwhelming barrage of different ethnic restaurants on Fourth Street, Puccini's La Dolce Vita provides a soothing return to classical Italian. During the warmer months, thick bushes of hydrangeas engulf the wrought iron gates of the patio, enclosing the tables in what feels more like an Italian garden than a restaurant. Here one feels encouraged to sip on a good pinot grigio and chat with friends.
