Ron Artest asked for bench time

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Pacers forward Ron Artest said Wednesday that he asked coach Rick Carlisle for time off because of a busy schedule that included promoting a soon-to-be released rap album, which led to his two-game benching.

Bush names new Attorney General

WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush has chosen White House counsel Alberto Gonzales, a Texas confidant and the most prominent Hispanic in the administration, to succeed Attorney General John Ashcroft, sources close to the White House said Wednesday. Ashcroft announced his resignation Tuesday, along with Commerce Secretary Don Evans, friend of the president's from Texas.

Schulte Corporation to bring more than 200 new jobs to the Bloomington area

The City of Bloomington will likely approve $828,000 in tax abatements for Bloomington's Schulte Corporation based the overwhelming support from the City Council members. The abatements are part of a $5 million incentive by the city and state. Schulte is a family-owned business which has been manufacturing home storage and organizational products in Bloomington since 1986. The corporation has been growing rapidly and plans to add 223 new jobs during the next five years.

Diminutive Bennett performs on, off field

He is one of the smallest players in Division I football at 5-foot-5 and 167 pounds, but Lance Bennett plays big. Against Oregon this year, the sophomore's 98-yard kickoff return for a TD shifted the game's momentum and helped IU upset the ranked Ducks. It was the second-longest return in school history. Against Michigan State, his 94-yard punt return for six-points broke a 14-year-old Hoosier record. Bennett, who also is a top songwriter, ranks first in the Big Ten and fourth in the nation in yards per kick return at 31.41.

Bar food drive to highlight county hunger problems

Along with bringing their two forms of identification, bar crawlers can bring two cans of food to Kilroy's Sports Bar tonight. In collaboration with three students in the IU School of Social Work, Kilroy's Sports Bar will play host to an event benefiting the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. People who bring two canned food goods will not only save a dollar on their cover charge, but they'll also help feed the hungry of Monroe County.

Purdue completes season sweep of Hoosiers in 5-setter

Parking spaces were scarce Wednesday night at University Gym as the IU women's volleyball team played host to arch-rival Purdue. The crowd was loud and the players were pumped, but the Hoosiers came up short for the fifth straight time, losing in a five-game heartbreaker.

Man under influence of drugs during fatal accident

Toxicology reports released by the Bloomington Police Department Wednesday night found traces of several drugs in the system of Bryan M. Gooldy, 45, whose car struck and killed IU alumna Katharine B. Comiskey early Tuesday morning. "Test results on the blood sample indicated the presence of opiates, cocaine and benzodiazepine," the release stated.

Big Ten soccer tournament begins today

While the No. 4 IU men's soccer team does not begin its Big Ten Tournament title defense until 11:30 a.m. Friday, in Ann Arbor, Mich., the rest of the tournament gets underway this morning. Because the Hoosiers (14-3-1, 5-1 Big Ten) tied Ohio State (10-5-2, 5-1 Big Ten) for the best record in the conference this season, the Big Ten looks to head-to-head meetings. IU defeated the Buckeyes 2-0 in Columbus in October, securing the No. 1 seed and the first round bye for the Hoosiers in the Big Ten Tournament.
