Singing Hoosiers hold spring concert

Saturday night was an unexpected step-touch down memory lane, as the IU Singing Hoosiers, under the direction of Michael Schwartzkopf, presented their 57th annual Spring Concert. From the first notes of “Another Openin’, Another Show,” belted in classic Broadway-style by sophomore Jami Leonard, to the final chord of “Lazy River,” the concert was a celebration of American popular song by the University’s most traveled musical ensemble.

A tsunami that struck without warning overnight Tuesday washed away coastal villages in the western Solomon Islands, killing at least 13 people. The death toll was expected to rise. Bodies floated out to sea, and thousands of residents camped out on a hillside above a devastated town. A wall of water reportedly 30 feet high struck the island of Choiseul and swept a third of a mile inland.

Hundreds of students gathered outside the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house to hear the music of rap artist Young Buck one April night in 2005. While the crowd was listening to the concert’s opening acts, members of the fraternity were scrambling to meet one final demand from the headliner. “Young Buck wanted a specific type of orange juice that we didn’t know about until five minutes before he went on,” said senior and Alpha Tau Omega’s Director of Special Events A.J. Rich. “His manager threatened he wouldn’t go on without it.”

Researchers say adopted kids may fare better

TREVLAC, Ind. – A propane gas tank caught fire around 3 p.m. Tuesday near several residences on Lake Lemon, sending dozens of firefighters rushing to the scene. The closest residence, 5146 North Shore Drive, did not appear damaged by the fire which, observers on the scene said sent flames shooting into the air.

Ragazzi offers arts, food in intimate atmosphere

Some people say the art on a person’s wall tells a lot about the character of that person. If this is true, then restaurant owner Tamyra d’Ippolito is eclectic, creative and unique. When d’Ippolito came to Bloomington from New York, she and her husband opened the quaint Italian restaurant Ragazzi Arte Cafe, 212 S. Rogers St., in November 2005. For d’Ippolito, Ragazzi has become not only a place to serve her favorite foods, including an iced lemon and chocolate cake, but a place to display and sell her favorite art. Nearly every inch of the restaurant’s walls are covered with the works of local artists, students and d’Ippolito’s friends.

As this week begins, I am hoping you will all be regaling each other with great stories of your April Fools’ Day pranks. With that in mind, I have my own to tell you. This past Sunday afternoon, I wrote a false Facebook message to my friend Whitney, in which I confessed my romantic feelings for her. I received a standard rejection reply of, “Well, there’s just a lot on my mind lately, so I can’t really devote much time to dating right now. But it isn’t anything wrong with you, it’s me.”

Money and stress

For many people, the greatest source of stress is money – or, rather, a lack of enough money to pay all the bills owed. In my private counseling office I see many people with financial problems: individuals, couples and families who tend to spend more than they make. I see serious arguments between couples on spending habits, which are often a result of family values. I see severe stress caused by an inability to pay off debt, often as a result of high-interest credit-card rates.
