The scene: I walk into a mall in the midst of post-Christmas discount madness. The jeans are buy one, get one half-off, and I think, “Whoa, that’s such a good deal. I’m practically stealing them.” So I buy two pairs, even though I have six very similar pairs of pants at home. But hey, I came out on top, right?

Thomas Gieryn, the Rudy Professor and chair of the Department of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences has been appointed to the new position of vice provost for faculty and academic affairs. Sanya Stephens will fill the position of vice provost for undergraduate education, according to an IU press release.

The 2008-09 installment of IU men’s basketball has been an exercise in lessons: lessons in patience, lessons in competitiveness, lessons in just about everything.

Following coach Tom Crean’s personal keys to games – smart shot selection and tenacious defense – IU raced out of the gates in its Big Ten home opener against Michigan and seemed destined to notch its first conference win. But in the end, the basic of all basketball fundamentals doomed the Hoosiers. IU (5-9, 0-2) squandered a 20 point second half lead, eventually succumbing to Michigan 72-66 in overtime. The Hoosiers made just two of eight free throws in overtime to seal their fate.

Boy shot by police is Bloomington North student

Police shot a 16-year-old male at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday outside the downtown Bloomington Transit terminal at the corner of 4th and Washington streets after police say he threatened officers with a knife.

Daniels releases new budget

Gov. Mitch Daniels introduced his new budget plan for Indiana during the Indianapolis Rotary Club luncheon Tuesday. Daniels took office as governor in 2005 and has since worked to balance the state budget.

IU women's basketball wins 9th consecutive game

The IU women’s basketball team has started conference play in the Big Ten making a statement – they want to be on the map and recognized for their play. After the Hoosiers 76-54 victory at home against last year’s co-Big Ten Champions the Iowa Hawkeyes it is going to be hard for anyone to ignore the team.
