Hoosiers keep bragging rights

Mike Davis wasn't going to let it happen again. Saturday in Minnesota, the Hoosiers blew a 13-point lead with fewer than three minutes remaining. Tuesday night against Purdue, IU didn't fall apart. The result was a 66-55 victory for the Hoosiers. After junior guard Dane Fife missed a pair of free throws, Davis, the interim head coach, called a time out with the Hoosiers up 52-45. The Boilermakers (12-6, 4-3 Big Ten) were surging and 3:20 remained. He didn't have to remind the players about the Minnesota game. They watched the game film as soon as they returned from the airport.

Brand calls for reform of athletics

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Four months after IU President Myles Brand's controversial firing of former men's basketball coach Bob Knight, Brand spoke at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., warning that collegiate athletics threaten to eclipse academics. Brand said he plans to align the IU athletics department to reflect his vision of "academics first" and decrease the commercial and entertainment aspects of college sports.

Students observe Lunar New Year

Today marks the Lunar New Year celebrated by Chinese all over the world. At IU, students from China, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan will celebrate with a party Friday at the Willkie Quad Auditorium.

Proposed Ivy Tech funding disputed

Enrollment continues to climb at Indiana's Ivy Tech State College. Now the college plans to expand throughout Monroe County, giving Gov. Frank O'Bannon reason to maintain its funding, said Thad Nation, a spokesman for the governor.

Coaches, players excited by 1st IU-Purdue battle

Purdue coach Gene Keady stood with his hand on his hip, his mouth gaping. Fife to Jeffries. Dunk. Keady crossed his arms and scowled. Fife to Haston. Dunk. Keady screamed.

Stone Cold earns title shot at Rumble

Stone Cold Steve Austin has earned a chance for the title at Wrestlemania. At the Royal Rumble, Austin survived the 30-man fiasco to deserve a shot at the belt. Kurt Angle is still the champion after Austin interfered in the title match Sunday, but this does not mean he will be the one to face Austin, as the belt might change hands in the interim.

Webmail popular in 1st week

Less than a week after it became available, Webmail is the e-mail system of choice for thousands of IU students. Technology officials said the new system has been well-received by users. Terry Usrey, the data communications director of University Information Technology Services, said while it is too early to know what students think of Webmail, the number of users speaks for itself.

Fraternity celebrates 90 years

Kirkwood Avenue has created many memories for IU students since it was first constructed. For Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, the history runs deep and holds strong. The Jiffy Treet ice cream parlor, 425 W. Kirkwood Ave., is not just a place for members of the house to get ice cream, but a place where they can trace their origin. Saturday, the house celebrated its 90th anniversary with a rededication ceremony of the plaque in front of Jiffy Treet, the place of the fraternity's first gathering.

Camerata is a musical treat

Sunday afternoon's concert by the Camerata Orchestra, led by guest conductor John Morris Russell, proved to be another welcome musical treat amid Bloomington's vibrant classical music scene. The orchestra, founded in 1989 by current concertmaster Lenore Hatfield, offers a professional-quality performance opportunity for the Bloomington community. Its affiliation with the world-renowned School of Music virtually guarantees its place among the best "community" orchestras in the country. Sunday's performance at Bloomington High School South supported this assumption.

MAC concert to be professor\'s debut

The IU Concert Orchestra, under the helm of conductor David Effron, will perform its first concert this year at 8 p.m. today at the the Musical Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

Jazz artists entertain, delight crowd

Jazz from Bloomington" played to a partially filled auditorium at Bloomington High School North Monday night. The audience ranged from children to senior citizens, all gathered to hear performers Bob Dorough and Janet Lawson.

Bill Clinton has suffered enough

Friday, his last day in office, former President Bill Clinton brought finality to the Lewinsky scandal most will remember as the low point of his presidency. He agreed to a deal requiring him to admit to "testifying falsely" during a deposition for the Paula Jones sexual harassment suit, when he claimed he did not have an affair with Monica Lewinsky. The deal will also save him from being disbarred, but his license to practice law in Arkansas is suspended for five years and he will pay a $25,000 fine.

It wasn't him." That's what I thought when I first heard the news. Jesse Jackson. Illegitimate child. Surely there must be some kind of mistake here. America's pre-eminent civil rights leader and religious role model was involved in an affair? Turns out it was true.

My winter disaffection

On the back porch two nights ago, looking at the sunset, I entered adulthood. I'd watched the gray tufted birds peck at the squirrel food I placed in a bowl on the picnic table, watched the dog sniff about the backyard for traces of the rabbits who love to visit in the dark, for signs of Earl the Opossum to emerge from under the porch next door. I watched a patch of world I've come to know well during the past three years.

It has been two years since the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, but the humor of the situation has not escaped the repertoire of many late night talk show hosts. In the last few months of his term, former President Bill Clinton was anything but a lame duck. Clinton tried to play a role in the Middle East peace process and even went on a farewell tour across the country.

Bloomington Mayor John Fernandez announced a decrease in the city's property tax rate Tuesday, saving the typical property owner in the city about $15.

You've all heard of "six degrees of separation," right? You know, it's that theory about how we're all only six acquaintances away from anybody on earth…or maybe it's in America. Who knows? Anyway, I've got a new proposal for y'all. It's called "six degrees of making out," or SDMO.

J.C. Penney store to close

The economic downturn has proved harsh for retailers, forcing Montgomery Ward into bankruptcy after 128 years. It's also taken a toll on J.C. Penney. The chain will close four stores in Indiana, including its College Mall location.

Team seeks turnaround

Sophomore Tom Coverdale is a basketball junkie from Noblesville, Ind., but the former Mr. Basketball couldn't bring himself to watch one game after Saturday's loss to Minnesota. And junior guard Dane Fife, who had his most productive offensive game against the Golden Gophers, said he never felt worse after a basketball game. Saturday's loss hit the Hoosiers hard.
