PLACENTIA, Calif. -- A mile-long freight train plowed head-on into a commuter train during rush hour Tuesday, killing two people and injuring at least 260 people, officials said.

WASHINGTON -- Rallying for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestine, racial discrimination and corporate globalization, tens of thousands of people from across the United States and abroad converged in Washington, D.C., last Saturday for one common goal: Peace. Police estimate about 75,000 marchers. Organizers put the number at more than 100,000.

Gates: Anti-trust will cripple Windows OS

WASHINGTON -- For the first time in Microsoft's four-year antitrust battle, Bill Gates took the witness stand yesterday and personally chastised states for seeking penalties he said would cripple the American software giant. With a mix of computer slide shows and short, calm answers, Gates sought to rebut the arguments of nine states that have asked a court to further punish Microsoft for operating an illegal monopoly that hurt competitors and consumers.

Abercrombie pulls T-shirts from shelves

Christopher Chan's entire summer wardrobe is from Abercrombie & Fitch. This now poses a problem for the senior chairperson for IU's Asian Student Union. The ASU is one organization among many in the Asian-American community nationwide upset over T-shirts the clothing company produced that portrayed men with slanted eyes and conk-shaped hats.

INS ruling could affect IU students

The events of Sept. 11 have spurred Immigration and Naturalization Services to change many visa policies, potentially affecting thousands of students who come to the U.S. without a student visa. The changes come in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks and the bungling of several cases by the INS, including the automatic mailing of final visa status change notification to the flight school that trained Mohamed Atta and Marwan Al-Shehhi, two of the suspected terrorists who perished in the attacks.

Female student attacked

A female student notified University police early Monday morning that she was the victim of a battery. According to official reports, the incident occurred on the south side of North Woodlawn Avenue at 4:15 a.m. The victim, 21, stated she was walking from her car to her residence when a white male walking toward her struck her on the right side of her face with a beer bottle he held in his hand.

Graduation looms ahead; A few things to say to IU

Four years ago, I came to IU, a wide-eyed freshman, ready for the world. A week from Saturday, I'll graduate (God willing) with a degree from a Big Ten University, a suffering liver and no job. But who am I to worry? I hear living on your parents' couch when you're 30 is a great way to get a girl, so I should be set. Who knows what's to come in the real world?
