From sneezy to sleazy

·

It seemed like only a fortnight ago -- I was staring at a pair of misshapen, disease-ridden testicles. Crippled by my inability to look away from the equivalent of a car crash, I sat in disgusted awe at the nauseating STD pictures shown in my fifth grade sex-ed class.

Where's Winston?

·

Rising from the oak benches — sweaty-faced, red-cheeked, round-bellied — he clasps the lapels of his three-piece suit. The man's voice thunders, "In the last few months we have been subject to cruel, wanton, indiscriminate bombings of our cities. Our enemy hopes of killing large numbers of civilians that will terrorize and cow the people of this mighty city. We can take it, and victory shall be ours!" No, this is not an American or world leader after 9-11.

Dresses for every body

·

I've never worn a dress. Really. Say what you want about the Scottish, but men wearing skirts, dresses, spaghetti straps and those fancy schmancy sandals are frowned upon at best and ostracized at worst. As the world tries so hard to rid itself of bigotry of all kinds, I see we have not yet removed all the pebbles from our bowls of light, especially regarding male and female gender roles.

Friends of friends connect on Web

Trying to find new friends on a campus of roughly 38,000 people can be a daunting task for even the most outgoing social butterflies. However, www.thehoosierweb.com is doing its part to make a large campus just a little bit smaller.

Filmmaker Kevin Smith plans second 'Clerks' movie

·

LOS ANGELES -- Ten years ago, Kevin Smith became the patron saint of the slothful. The aspiring New Jersey filmmaker proved that if a guy worked hard enough, he could still make his dreams come true while spending a lot of time collecting comic books, debating the merits of peculiar sex, and selling cigarettes and candy to dead-eyed consumers.

Polar opposite emotions

·

As I arrived at the John Waldron Arts Center Saturday, I was unsure what to expect because I was unfamiliar with local playwright Thomas Kristopher. But Kristopher's two one-act plays turned out to be polar opposites in the emotions they expressed.

Students angry with the addition of a Chipotle restaurant to Kirkwood Avenue ripped down the sign announcing the restaurant's arrival on one of the busiest streets in Bloomington. Upset by the emergence of yet another commercial chain in downtown Bloomington, the group of students tore the sign down, denouncing its operations and relation to parent-company McDonald's.

Trend Tidbits

·

Naming the storm Ever wonder how hurricanes are named? According to the National Hurricane Center, the first hurricane was named by an Australian forecaster in the early 1900s. He named them after political figures he disliked. During World War II, U.S. Army and Navy meteorologists named cyclones in the Pacific Ocean after their wives or girlfriends. The National Weather Center started naming hurricanes officially in the early 1950s and added the use women's names in the late 1970s.

Packrats thrive in cyberspace

·

When Claudia Crowley came across a picture of a cow skull on the Internet, she knew it would hang perfectly on the back of her father's Southern-style fence. Best of all, the skull -- with glued-on horns and a bullet through its head -- was free. A few days later, she had the skull in her home. When she gave her father the three-pound cow cranium, it was then she realized that The Freecycle Network, www.freecycle.org, an international Yahoo! community group, actually worked. In fact, it was genius.
