Legal digital media revolution comes to IU

·

Disposable income is something most students forfeit after graduating high school. As soon as students cross over into college, every cent tends to go toward the necessities: textbooks, tuition and, of course, pizza.

planetary meltdown

·

The predicament of global warming is like a frog, a stove and a pot of water. Boil the water before you drop in the frog, and it will jump out of the pot to safety in a flash. But place the frog in water heated gradually, and it will never jump out.

Animal abuse not uncommon

·

Some of Bloomington's most brutal crimes are committed against creatures who are completely defenseless. Crimes might range from denying food and water to burning, hanging and shooting.

Political Mad Libs

·

President George W. Bush just can't get anything right. He had the support of the entire country after Sept. 11, then pissed off a bunch of people with the Patriot Act. When the wrest of the world was still pretty much behind him, he decided to give them a big "up yours" with the invasion of Iraq. And in the midst of an already hotly contested election, he decided to make things even worse by proposing an amendment to ban gay marriage.

Giving the 'Net a new 'face'

·

It figures that students don't worry about what information they share online until someone gets arrested. Since an alleged rape victim's friend used Thefacebook to identify her attacker, some of the site's members are a little worried about who else might be reading their Web-based profiles. Why did we put all our personal information in a public place, anyway? Did we forget about when it's appropriate to let things out in the open and what is better kept private?

SpongeBob Queerpants

·

Just as we've finally rid our impressionable children of that purple menace Tinky-Winky, a new and even more sinister threat has sashayed into his place. That's right, everyone, it's SpongeBob ... and he's gay! This cartoon character isn't content to keep his sinful nature to himself, either. He regularly uses his Nickelodeon show to flaunt his sick, hand-holding fetish with his same-sex crony Patrick, and now he's recruiting other childhood heroes.

Athletics must mind manners

·

Last year's tussle between students and the administration concerning the addition of the mandatory $30 athletic fee still remains fresh in our minds and subtracted from our bank accounts. The process to renew the fee is about to begin, and this time students need to be part of the decision process, unlike a year ago. We understand what the fee is about. This column isn't intended to declare either support or opposition. However, we find the way in which the administration went about passing the measure last year unacceptable.

Around the World

·

WASHINGTON -- When U.S. troops pulled Saddam Hussein from a hole in the ground a year ago, the capture was described afterward as the work of a team of conventional and special operations troops.

Iraqi bombing suspect arrested

·

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi security forces have arrested the "most lethal" top lieutenant of al-Qaida's leader in Iraq -- a man allegedly behind most of the car bombings in Baghdad since the U.S.-led invasion, including the 2003 assault on U.N. headquarters that killed 22 people, the prime minister's office said Monday.

Journalism dean search narrowed to 3 candidates

·

The committee hunting for someone to fill the shoes of retiring IU School of Journalism Dean Trevor Brown has narrowed its search down to three. Again. After a committee failed to reach a consensus on a single candidate in the spring of 2004, a new committee, chaired by Associate Dean of Journalism Graduate Studies Dan Drew, announced its three new finalists Friday.

Athletics fee renewal up for debate

·

With less than a year since the battle between the students and the administration over the controversial implementation of the $30 student athletics fee, the process to renew the fee is about to begin. Opposed by many student groups, the fee brought $1,134,630 to the athletics department riddled by a deficit amounting to more than $5 million. Whether or not the fee will be renewed is not the only question during the renewal process.

A tale of TWO Halves

·

In the first half, IU relied on freshman D.J. White for its offensive production. In the second half, the Hoosiers had to look elsewhere with White sitting out more than 11 minutes with cramps. But IU found another way to win in gutting out a 67-60 victory against Ohio State. That other way was junior guard Bracey Wright, who after scoring only five first-half points exploded in the second for 18 points and two crucial assists resulting in dunks by Pat Ewing Jr. and White, who reentered the game with 2:12 to go after sitting for several minutes.

·

New IU football coach Terry Hoeppner might have Indiana roots, but his Ohio background is paying big dividends for the Hoosiers as they gained another commitment from the Buckeye state -- defensive back Dan Kinsey from Wellsville, Ohio.
