Budget deficit trumps school funds

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov. Mitch Daniels defended his decision to withhold about $52 million that public schools had expected to receive this calendar year, saying Friday the state cannot afford to distribute the money and still balance its budget.

CROTHERSVILLE, Ind. -- The body of a missing 10-year-old girl was discovered by a police officer on patrol Sunday, five days after she disappeared while returning home from an errand, authorities said.

Sidewalk paint upsets students

At a school where diversity is touted, beliefs are being stepped on. Members of IU's Muslim community said they are offended and puzzled that someone painted the sacred phrase "In the name of Allah, most gracious, most merciful" on sidewalks across campus. The phrase is one of the most holy in Islam, and students said it should not be written on a place where thousands of people walk every day.

IU club to raise funds for cancer survivors

IU has become the home of a new campus club, Circle of Life, which was organized to raise funds for charities. The fund-raising group is working on its first program, a mini-marathon scheduled to be held in Bloomington during the spring of 2006.

Orchestra marks 35th anniversary

A volunteer orchestra made up of students, amateurs and professional musicians will take audiences from Vienna to Israel while celebrating its 35th anniversary at 8 p.m. Saturday. The Bloomington Symphony Orchestra's concert will present community-tied pieces written and preformed by local musicians.

IU professors analyze state of Iraq prior to Sunday's elections

Library plans proposed to state officials

Big things are happening at the IU Main Library -- $80 million worth of big things. While the finishing touches are being put into place for the unveiling of the Information Commons 2 next month, University officials are at the state capital requesting $28 million, enough to begin phase one of renovations on the Main Library.

In 2nd game back Jackson, Pacers fall to Detroit by 12

Chauncey Billups scored 20 points and Tayshaun Prince had 16 points and seven rebounds as the Detroit Pistons used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Indiana Pacers 88-76 Thursday night. It was the second meeting between the teams since Nov. 19, when Pacers players brawled with Pistons fans after Ben Wallace shoved Ron Artest. Both games have been in Indianapolis, and both times the Pistons have won. The teams face each for the last time in the regular season March 25 at Detroit. That will be Indiana's first trip back to the Palace of Auburn Hills since the fight.

'Peeping tom' suspect arrested

After two warrants were filed for his arrest, the suspect in the "peeping tom" case was picked up and booked into Monroe County Jail Thursday morning by a bail bondsman, who also happened to be his stepfather.

Trustees approve Ashton design

Ashton Center is going to get a face-lift as early as next spring. The IU Board of Trustees' Facilities Committee voted unanimously Thursday in the Dogwood Room of the Indiana Memorial Union to approve designs for the new center. It is slated to replace Ashton's older buildings, such as Aley and Coulter Halls, which would be demolished to make room for the new dormitory, Bruce Jacobs, vice chancellor of auxiliary services and programs said. The buildings currently inhabited by students, Johnston, Hershey, Mason, Moffat, Vos, Stemple and Weatherly Halls, would be unaffected by the new plan.

IUSA exec asked to step down

IU to face Michigan in season opener

The IU water polo team is looking to build on an impressive 20-9 record last year as it begins its season this weekend at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor. The Hoosiers finished the season by placing third at the College Water Polo Association Eastern Championships and ranked No. 13 in the country. Thirteen letter winners return from last year's team, including three All Conference selections in seniors Krista Peterson, Kandace Waldthaler and Jessica Goldner. Peterson is also a two-time honorable mention All-American.

Team travels to North Carolina for 'no lose' situation against 2 ranked opponents

It's not often that a team is in a "no-lose" situation, but IU coach Lin Loring said that he thinks the women's tennis team is going to be presented with one in this weekend's road match against No. 8 Duke University and No. 15 University of North Carolina.

Almost there: 1 meet before Big Ten final

One meet is left for the No. 24 women's swimming and diving team before it plays host to the Big Ten Championship. IU is looking to protect its streak of five wins and looks to gain another victory against Big Ten favorite Penn State. The cream and crimson will be playing host to the Nittany Lions at 6 p.m. Friday and at 10 a.m. Saturday. IU is coming off a close battle between Purdue as the Hoosiers drowned the Boilermakers last weekend 157-141. "We are coming to the part of the season were we are starting to back off our hard practices and start to fine tune for the Big Ten and NCAA Championships," said coach Dorsey Tierney. "Penn State will be a challenge for us and pull a lot of depth from their team in this meet."

No. 3 Hoosiers scorching the track

Hoosiers try to topple Penn State for 1st time

University Park is the next stop for the IU road show, where the grapplers will look to avenge a 37-4 drubbing last January in Bloomington. The Hoosiers, at 12-1 is off to their best start since the 1995-96 season, have never won in six meetings against Penn State. Coach Duane Goldman will get an opportunity to reverse that trend Friday. He will have a full lineup to work with for the first time in weeks. Two starters were held out last week because of a bout with the flu.

Headaches continue with IU away from home

All season long IU has been mired in road difficulties, and that didn't change Thursday night as the Hoosiers fell to Illinois 53-43 in Champaign, Ill. The same problems that have been plaguing IU (8-10, Big Ten 1-7) throughout Big Ten play -- scoring droughts and turnovers -- ended any chance the Hoosiers had of picking up their first conference road win. Despite sluggish play, IU had many chances to even the score toward the game's end.
