Rumsfeld visits Kurdish region of Iraq

SALAHUDDIN, Iraq -- On a whirlwind tour of Iraq that included his first visit to the Kurdish region, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld urged the emerging national government Tuesday to avoid politicizing the Iraqi military. At a news conference in a shaded courtyard surrounded by young pear trees, Rumsfeld was asked whether Iraqi officials he met earlier in Baghdad had given him assurances about continuity in the senior leadership of the Iraqi security forces.

Rainbow parties?

Lately, we've been bombarded with teen and preteen sex. Well, not teen sex itself, but rather discussions about teens and preteens having sex. "Oprah" and "Dateline" are talking about middle school kids at "rainbow parties," where teenage girls wear different colors of lipstick and teenage boys compete to see who winds up with a rainbow on their penis. I must confess that even I am shocked (and I am pretty hard to shock).

Something bad happened this week. Before Monday night, bicycles mattered. Concerts and parties mattered. Exams mattered. Yet for many, these matters have been postponed. There is a family who has lost their daughter, IU senior Ashley Crouse. That family has become larger after the course of events that occurred late Monday night.

IU student killed in car crash

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- IU senior Ashley Crouse, 21, was killed following a two-car accident that occurred on campus late Monday night, according to the IU Police Department. Crouse was pronounced dead at 12:09 a.m. today at Bloomington Hospital. Crouse, her boyfriend Christopher Carlson and an unidentified female passenger were driving southbound on Hawthorne Avenue when their red Jeep Cherokee was struck on the driver's side by a gray Honda station wagon at the intersection of Hawthorne Avenue and Third Street.

Seniors Norka Acosta and Jami Bennett were driving back from working on a group project when they drove by the accident. They immediately stopped, got out their first aid kit and assisted in helping the victims. Bennett vividly recalls the moment she made the decision to act.

BPD looking into liquor store robbery

The Bloomington Police Department is currently investigating the Saturday night robbery of Karton King Liquor and Discount Tobacco, 435 S. Walnut St. The events began when two suspects, a man and a woman, entered the liquor store and began wandering around, according to police reports.
