Bedford resident recalls 1979 experience as Iran hostage

Don Sharer has reason to hold a grudge against Iran. As one of the 52 Americans taken hostage in 1979 at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Sharer, who now lives in Bedford, was subject to torture and psychological abuse. He described a typical mock execution.

American patriotism burns bright for July 4

More than two centuries after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, bombs burst through the air Monday night. Beyond the traditional holiday parade hosted in about every community across the U.S., Bloomington residents and guests mixed and mingled throughout a Fourth of July holiday weekend that offered various learning opportunities, a fish fry, and a 35-minute firework show. Otherwise patriotic Americans were spotted along the city's streets draped in American flag clothing and accessories, including red, white and blue hair ribbons, top hats and face paint.

Decision allows file sharing suits

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that manufacturers of peer-to-peer downloading programs can be held liable for copyright infringement committed by users. "We hold that one who distributes a device with the object of promoting its use to infringe copyright, as shown by clear expression or other affirmative steps taken to foster infringement, is liable for the resulting acts of infringement by third parties," said Justice David Souter, who wrote the court's 24-page opinion.

Bloomington readying for July 4 celebration, parade

Around the country the smell of charcoal, gun powder, and barbeque smoke will soon permeate the air, and Bloomington will be no different. It has been 229 years since the Founding Fathers sat together in a room and signed a piece of paper that would birth American democracy, and nothing says happy 229th birthday like good food, fun and fireworks.

This man has seen undefeated basketball teams. He has seen three different wars. He was seen journalism at IU change from a department within the College of Arts and Sciences to a reputable school. But today, IU School of Journalism Dean Trevor Brown will see the inside of the J-school as a dean for the last time. Brown retires today after more than 20 years of service to IU in that position.

Timberwolves pick Wright in 2nd round

Forty-six picks came and went, but Bracey Wright's Draft night came to a close as the Minnesota Timberwolves selected him in the second round with the No. 47 pick overall. Though Wright was drafted, only first round picks are given guaranteed contracts. Despite falling lower than he and his agent Bob McClaren felt he would go, Wright said he is still excited about going to the Timberwolves.

Man dies after heart attack at SRSC pool

Brian Counsilman, 49, passed away after suffering from cardiac arrest while swimming in the indoor pool at the Student Recreational Sports Complex Tuesday night. Counsilman was the son of the late James "Doc" Counsilman who coached IU men's swimming from 1957 to 1990. According to Lt. Jerry Minger of the IUPD, Counsilman had been swimming laps at the SRSC when workers there noticed him drift back and begin to sink in the water.

My draft conversion

I'm not a very religious person. But in late June, every year, I manage to become one -- and once again on Tuesday night I was converted. Reaching way back in my mind, I can dig out my earliest NBA Draft memory -- naively arguing with my dad before 1992's draft about Christian Laettner being drafted before Shaquille O'Neal. But hey, it could have been worse. I could have put him on the Dream Team.

NBA Draft seeing Blue

The North Carolina Tarheels dominated throughout the college season, winning 33 games en route to the 2005 National Championship. Tuesday night in New York, the Tarheels stole the show at the NBA Draft as four players from the title squad were selected in the lottery, in the first 14 picks of the draft. It was the first time any school had four players picked in the lottery. The last team to have four players selected in the first round was Duke in 1999.
