Exploring the realms of sexual fantasies

When I observed a flier hailing the arrival of Eroticon at Axis Saturday night, I knew immediately what to do -- find a female reporter to escort me to cover the show. For the last two months I have attempted to explore the overall BDSM scene in person, online and within books, but somewhat to no avail. For those who lose themselves in acronyms, we are talking about "bondage & discipline," "dominance & submission" and "sadomasochism."

Veto blunders

Unbelievable. President George W. Bush has used the veto zero times in his presidency thus far. For five years, every single bill Congress has sent him has been signed into law. American ideals up in flames

More than a week ago, two minors admitted to stealing a gay pride flag from Inner Chef, a local business, and burning it. The two minors claim they took the flag because it was "unpatriotic." But if the two 17-year-olds wanted to show support for American ideals last Saturday night, they missed the boat.

Critics: Daniels' plan delays road projects

INDIANAPOLIS - Critics say Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels' 10-year road plan shifts the most expensive projects to later years, delaying the toughest budget decisions. Daniels' plan, intended to solve the state's $2.1 billion road construction shortfall, would privatize two interstate highways and raise tolls in northern Indiana.

NAACP freedom fund banquet draws crowd

All walks of life gathered Saturday night for the NAACP Monroe County Branch Annual Freedom Fund Banquet. Monroe County NAACP President Bill Vance said the banquet hall was overflowing because of the unexpected arrival of Indiana NAACP president Barbara Bolling. The theme for this year's banquet was "Conscience of a Nation." For former Monroe County NAACP President Clarence W. Gillium, the theme means that the focus should be on education, the political issue he considers most important.

Urination leads to robbery arrest

Bloomington resident Juan Aviles, 24, had a busy Saturday night. The Bloomington Police Department was already searching for him in connection with two separate robberies when he was taken into custody for public urination behind Papa John's Pizza on North Walnut Street. "That," said BPD Sgt. Mick Williams, "will get you every time." Aviles faces preliminarily charges of two counts of robbery, two counts of intimidation, two counts of battery, one count of public intoxication and one count of public indecency.

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Police began receiving word midweek that gangs were going to descend on a neighborhood where a riot erupted over a planned march by a white supremacist group, but the resulting disturbance was worse than expected, the police chief said Sunday.

Drug investigation yields marijuana, cocaine seizure

A 22-year-old Bloomington man was arrested Thursday night on drug charges after a traffic stop during an ongoing narcotics investigation. Nehemiah Grimes, 22, told police he was dealing cocaine after a search of his apartment turned over about 5 grams of the substance, along with scales and four guns. Grimes and three others were arrested when Grimes' vehicle was pulled over Thursday night at the intersection of 10th Street and the 45/46 bypass. During the arrest, police found Grimes with marijuana and a large amount of cash.

Sunnis fall short of blocking Iraqi constiution passage

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraq's landmark constitution seemed assured of passage Sunday after initial results showed minority Sunni Arabs had fallen short in an effort to veto it at the polls. The apparent acceptance was a major step in the attempt to establish a democratic government that could lead to the withdrawal of U.S. troops.

Behrman run likely to draw 1,200

Runners, walkers and everyone with a pace in between will turn out this weekend for the sixth annual Jill Behrman Run for the End Zone. The funds raised from this year's run, which begins at the John Mellencamp Pavilion, will be split between Jill's House, which houses patients undergoing outpatient therapy in Bloomington, and a scholarship in Behrman's name for students who display leadership skills and good ethics in their involvement with the IU Department of Recreational Sports.

Hysteria replaces Madness due to new NCAA rules

Last season, a first-game exit from the Big Ten tournament sucked the madness out of the Hoosiers' March, and hysteria ensued. Bracey Wright, leading scorer for the team and the Big Ten, left for the NBA draft and IU head coach Mike Davis again faced criticism for failing to make the NCAA tournament. It's only fitting that the Hoosiers' third quest for madness begins with a little bit of hysteria.

Junior guard Roderick Wilmont sat tall on a tiny chair in front of giggly, wide-eyed school children who were in awe of their atypical storyteller, who just brushed through the final pages of "Where the Wild Things Are." "What was your favorite book?" a tiny voice from the crowd said. "I loved 'Green Eggs and Ham.' But my other favorite book was 'Miss Nelson.' That used to give me nightmares," Wilmont said to a roar of laughter.

Film crew to capture IU 'partying'

Fuzzy bar-hopping memories from this weekend might sharpen come mid- November. A film crew is rolling into three Bloomington bars Saturday night to film students "partying" for a DVD called "The Top 10 Party Schools," which will be sold online in about a month, said Jessica Morgan, a producer for Dancing Toad Productions, the Manhattan-based company producing the feature.

Hoosiers on the prowl in Auburn

The IU women's swimming and diving team will begin its season in dramatic fashion as the Hoosiers face off against one of the nation's most elite teams: the Tigers of Auburn University. IU will make its first splash of the season and hopes to continue its tradition of excellence at 6:30 p.m. today at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center in Auburn, Ala.
