Health fair to offer free massages, bone density tests

The 34th annual campus health fair is being held today at Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union. The fair will offer a variety of interactive exhibits including the new bone density test to raise awareness about osteoporosis. Health and Wellness Education Office Coordinator Tracy Crowe said about 1,000 students attend the fair each year.

Panel to discuss women's reproductive rights

The IU Civil Liberties Union will sponsor "It's My Choice," a panel discussion of women's rights, at 8:30 p.m. today in Room 209 of the Kelley School of Business. The panel will address issues of constitutionality and privacy in relation to reproductive freedom and abortion.

Congress could cut $15 billion in student loans

Bills in the U.S. House and Senate could cut as much as $15 billion from federally subsidized student loans in an effort to reduce spending. The House could meet as soon as this week to vote on a version of the bill, which is expected to reduce federal entitlement spending by $50 billion, including student loan subsidies. Subsidized student loans, such as Stafford loans, are interest-free and given to students on the basis of financial need.

Tornado hits home

It wasn't until after the tornado hit southern Indiana early Sunday morning that Sarah Napier, an IU senior, decided to travel home to Newburgh, Ind. Napier loaded up her dark green Toyota Camry and made the nearly three-hour drive home in hopes to reassure herself that her family and home were indeed OK. "After I talked to my family on the phone, I decided that it just wasn't enough," Napier said. TORNADO KILLS 23

A tornado tore across western Kentucky and Indiana early Sunday, killing at least 23 as it cut through a mobile home park in Evansville and obliterated trailers and houses as residents slept. The tornado, the deadliest to hit Indiana in 30 years, struck at about 2 a.m. with winds of at least 158 mph. About 200 were injured and thousands lost power, officials said.

Pete Rose Jr. pleads guilty to distributing drug to teammates

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Pete Rose Jr., the son of baseball's all-time hits leader, pleaded guilty Monday to charges that he distributed GBL, a drug sometimes sold as a steroid alternative, to his minor league teammates.

IU's Bashore named Big Ten Player of the Year

Faculty question Herbert as leader

Faculty members continued to raise questions about President Adam Herbert's leadership Monday, calling for a meeting of the faculty to discuss the state of the IU-Bloomington chancellor search and Herbert's role as IU president. Bloomington Faculty Council President Ted Miller received a petition calling for a special meeting signed by 133 IUB faculty members. The faculty will meet at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in the IU Auditorium.

Group protests gays with flag burning, songs

About 25 members of the Old Paths Baptist Church protested Monday afternoon outside The Inner Chef, chanting anti-gay slogans, burning a gay pride flag and brandishing signs with messages like "Fags Die, God Laughs." Bobb Easterbrook, a clerk at the store, was the only person working there at the time.

IU to offer 1st gender studies Ph.D. degree

Following the lead of Alfred Kinsey, IU once again is trailblazing the path in the study of gender and sexuality. The IU board of trustees unanimously approved a measure at its Friday meeting in Richmond, Ind., to create a gender studies Ph.D., making it the first and only doctorate degree offered for gender studies in the country.

Crews search for bodies of tornado victims

EVANSVILLE -- Crews broke the containment walls of a large drainage pond to search its bottom Monday, the day after the nation's deadliest tornado in years loaded it with wreckage from a smashed mobile home park.

Boy survives illness, vows to join NBA

Nine-year-old Dallas Fox came close to death's door less than two years ago when lesions formed on his brain -- a reaction to treatment for the kidney transplant he received when he was only 4. Last week, Dallas played in his first basketball game, running toward whomever had the ball like the rest of the players and leaving Bloomington's Boys and Girls Club gym with his first assist.

Clinton urges global cooperation, interdependence
