A pall of shame

Now that Election Day furor has subsided, it's time to look at what issues drove voters to the polls. Six states voted to raise the minimum wage. Others debated gay marriage and abortion. But none were quite as ridiculous as Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst's platform: a "death penalty sentence for a second sexually violent offense against a child under age 14." Like other states' versions of "Jessica's Law," Texas' would also impose tougher penalties for first-time sex offenders and require that they be monitored by GPS tracking for life.

Senior Wilmont undaunted by recent 'slump'

Don't tell Rod Wilmont that he's in a slump. He'll just smile and laugh it off. The IU senior has scored just four points on 1-of-8 shooting in the last two games. But to Wilmont, that's no reason to discount his shooting and scoring abilities when IU faces Western Illinois University (3-4) at 7 p.m. tonight at Assembly Hall.

'Fat studies' gaining weight in academia

PHILADELPHIA -- Perceptions about body weight don't stop at the scales anymore. "Fat studies" is a growing interdisciplinary area of study at universities across the country devoted to examining discrimination and stereotypes against the fat body and studying the collective experience of fat people in society.

University considers video kiosk for Benton mural

Located in Woodburn Hall, Thomas Hart Benton's mural, "Parks, the Circus, the Klan, the Press," has been a source of controversy at IU ever since former University President Herman B Wells brought the murals to Bloomington in 1939. Depicting a Ku Klux Klan rally beside a towering church, the mural that now resides in A lecture hall has been raising questions of ethics and morality since it was painted in 1933.

Group hopes to educate students about human rights by showing video

IU Amnesty International will offer a free showing of the 2006 film "The Road to Guantanamo" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Wylie Hall, room 015. The film was directed by Michael Winterbottom and tells the story of three British men who were kept at the U.S.-controlled detainment camp in Cuba for nearly three years without ever being formally charged with any crime.

Forecasting office presents IU with award

The National Weather Forecast Office in central Indiana awarded the IU Physical Plant the 50-year Institutional Award in honor of the plant's half a century of collecting metereological data.

IMU director takes position at University of Michigan

Woman surrenders 6 years after $500,000 theft

KOKOMO -- A woman suspected of stealing nearly $500,000 while servicing bank machines before disappearing six years ago walked into a police station and surrendered, with a detective saying she had tired of life as a fugitive.
