Around the world

·

A suicide bomber breached Baghdad’s heavy security presence again Thursday, killing a dozen people in a mostly Shiite district a day after more than 230 people died in one of the war’s deadliest episodes of violence.

Partisan parlor tricks

·

Call me a cynic, but I’m no fan of bipartisanship. Something about Democrats and Republicans working together rubs me the wrong way. So, I was utterly amused to see sidewalk chalking for a “Support the Troops” rally, sponsored by the IU College Democrats and IU College Republicans.

The running of the women’s and men’s Little 50 on Thursday at the Haugh Track and Field Complex officially kicked off the “world’s greatest college weekend.” Despite chilly weather, fans were in high spirits as hundreds came out to urge on their teams.

Hoosiers set to take on Big Ten’s best, worst this weekend

·

The IU softball team will host Michigan and Michigan State this weekend at home before embarking on a monthlong road trip. The 2-7 record the Hoosiers have on the road, coupled with a 1-9 mark in the Big Ten, doesn’t bode well for the future of the IU season.

Chicago Field Museum exhibit to feature some of world’s most famous maps

·

CHICAGO – You have a world atlas on your desk. With a few mouse clicks, you can print out door-to-door directions via the Internet. Then there’s the GPS device mounted on your car’s windshield. With Americans possessing more tools than ever to help get them where they want to go, a major upcoming exhibit at the Field Museum will route how maps have changed over the centuries and how various cultures have chosen to depict the world. “Maps: Finding Our Place in the World,” opening Nov. 2, will feature more than 130 famous or prized maps.

Tragic lessons

·

Many of us have tried to make sense of the murders and suicide at Virginia Tech on Monday. It’s hard to comprehend how one person can become so isolated, angry and hopeless that the only solution is to destroy life that he has come to loathe so fiercely. But it’s not simply the gunman’s actions that have unsettled my thinking.

Forgivable insanity

·

For students, Friday, May 4 will be a day of jubilation. Here in Bloomington the last day of final exams rings in the summer vacation with festivities that rival the madness of Little 500 just two weeks before. With thoughts turned to warm beaches and cold daiquiris it will be easy to ignore the unconscionable execution of David Leon Woods.

MFA printmaking exhibit to be held in remains of Ladyman’s Cafe

·

The historic Bloomington restaurant where tables and chairs once sat quickly became a blank canvas for nine Master of Fine Arts printmaking students. Noel W. Anderson, Paul Bohensky III, Joshua Brennan, Lee Busick, Julian Hensarling, Nate Herman Kuznia, Young Suk Lee, Dora Lisa Rosenbaum and Jeremy Sweet embarked on their journeys with little more than tools, paint and open minds when they started work on their exhibit, “Pre-Demolition Installation Exhibition,” just a few weeks ago.

A conversation with Little 500 itself

·

Little 500 weighs heavily on the minds of many students, faculty and alumni as one of the biggest events of the year. Commentary from coaches, riders and fans has been sought extensively and found readily. Talk of tradition, strategy, victory and alcohol have been in the spotlight in such comments.

Finding the music

·

Sounds from a flute floated through the smooth, circular halls of the Jacobs School of Music while footsteps kept the rhythm on the old marbled tile. As doors to classrooms and practice halls swung open and shut, the music of Thursday, April 19, weaved in and out of ears that paused to listen.

A month later, Wade Steffey’s parents still moving on

·

Dale Steffey’s eyes well-up when he mentions anything involving his late son. His tears fill up around his eyes – just enough to not drop onto his cheek. Sleepless nights can be seen on his and his wife’s faces. Dawn Adams describes how it isn’t the same going to sleep at night. It’s harder to do now – now that their son is gone.

Women’s race features wealth of top teams

·

Some say Little 500 is all about strategy. But the women of Teter seem to have a pretty simple equation that serves as a team motto: “Ride fast, turn left.” And so long as they try their hardest, the No. 1 goal for the women is to have fun. “If our best means we are the best, that would be extra fun,” said junior Teter rider Sydney Hatten.
