Dealership offers free car to ‘Be Cool, Stay in School’

While college professors struggle to keep daily attendance high throughout the semester, Monroe County high schools have a new incentive to encourage students to stay in the classroom. Students from the Monroe County Community School Corporation who have perfect attendance records will be entered to win a 2007 Pontiac G5, with a price tag of around $16,000, from Curry Buick Cadillac Pontiac GMC Inc. in Bloomington. “It’s really cool for whoever wins,” said Mari Welton, a junior from Bloomington High School South.

It has been over a decade since Steven Cole Hughes last visited Bloomington, but this time he will not be sitting in a classroom. Instead, he will be relaxing and watching his play “cowboyily,” opening tonight at 8 p.m. on the Bloomington Playwrights Project stage. Hughes, a playwright and IU alumnus, created “cowboyily,” a play that shows the clashing of two different characters: the “city mouse” and the “country mouse,” and examines how they coexist.

350 21st Century Scholars receive free tuition, boarding

Gay, straight or different?

Earlier this year, Lifetime broadcast “Gay, Straight, or Taken,” a reality dating show. One woman spent time with three men: one straight and single, one gay and in a relationship, and one straight and in a relationship. After participating in various activities that the audience might consider typically “masculine” or “feminine,” the female contestant had to guess which man was straight and single. It’s a catchy premise, with many problems with perpetuation of stereotypes and restricted gender roles. But who am I to criticize? I play the game every day!

The Bloomington post office is closing its downtown location in 2009. The First United Methodist Church is not renewing the U.S. Postal Service’s lease on the Fourth Street location, ending a 60-year stay.

Education and undies

I’ll admit that boys who walk around with low-slung pants and exposed boxers look like major tools. That applies both to the “suburban urban dude” and the “tight pants Emo wimp.” I also hate being forcibly exposed to the thongs of my female classmates. Despite my own personal views on the issue, I’m still baffled by the good people of Atlanta, who decided to a hold a public hearing centered on exposed undergarments.
