Training shows in track team's win against Ohio State

·

The sprinters on the women's track and field team focused on Ohio State All-American Donica Merriman prior to the Hoosiers' dual meet against the Buckeyes Saturday at Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse. Merriman showed up for the meet in street clothes and didn't run. But the Hoosiers didn't need to feel pressure from the sprinter and hurdler to meet five NCAA provisional qualifying marks in four events and win eight of 15 events to capture the meet 89-70.

Bennett's return draws crowd

·

MADISON, Wisc. -- Women's basketball packed the front pages of Wisconsin newspapers. The coverage shocked Wisconsin coach Jane Albright. Nine thousand fans flurried to the Kohl Center, a large crowd even for basketball-friendly Wisconsin. But the papers weren't covering the Wisconsin-IU women's basketball game. And a lot of the fans weren't there to see junior center Jill Chapman duel with UW sophomore center Nina Smith.

Big Badgers bury Hoosiers

·

MADISON, Wisc. -- Kathi Bennett walked to both of the edges of her bench, looking for an answer. She didn't find it. With the IU post game shredded by fouls, Wisconsin exploited the weakness consistently and purposely in a 69-62 Badger win Sunday in front of 9,100 fans at the Kohl Center. "Wisconsin really out-foxed us and played very well," Bennett said. "Their post players were dynamite and really hurt us."

Gophers dig up victory

·

MINNEAPOLIS -- The game appeared to be well in hand. IU held a 13-point lead with less than three minutes to go, and Minnesota wasn't threatening. But looks can be deceiving. Minnesota implemented a full-court press, and within those three minutes, the Golden Gophers tied the game and sent it to overtime, where they prevailed 78-74 Saturday in Williams Arena.

Indianapolis protest draws little attention

INDIANAPOLIS -- President George W. Bush's inauguration Saturday sparked protests across the country, including one in downtown Indianapolis. Thousands thronged the streets of Washington, D.C., in the largest inaugural demonstration since 1973, when Richard Nixon was sworn in at the height of the Vietnam War. Political activists planned on organizing protests in every major metropolitan area.

Dorm won't join RHA

·

The Eigenmann Hall judicial board ruled Friday that the Eigenmann Residents Association and the Residence Halls Association will not merge. The board decided the Nov. 28 referendum was not valid because the minimum 20 percent of Eigenmann residents did not vote. The referendum would have combined Eigenmann Residents Association with RHA, which comprises the other 10 dorms. RHA's residents passed the referendum 414-21, while students living in Eigenmann voted 25-15 against it.

Modern take on play doesn't live up to script

·

Although classic theatrical productions typically appeal to an older audience, Monroe County Civic Theater's production of "La Celestina" defies the standard, modifying an ancient story and attracting a younger crowd Friday. "It's fun seeing young people doing a classic show," audience member David Goodrum said. "It would be interesting to know why they chose this play for their production."

Bush supporters react to protesters in Washington

·

WASHINGTON D.C. -- The cold rain that fell on the nation's capital Saturday could soak through your gloves and make your hands numb in less than 10 minutes. It was enough to make protesters think twice before leaving their hotel rooms. The protesters gathered in front of the Supreme Court, shouting, "What do we want? Justice. When do we want it? Now." They carried signs; some were serious --"Hail to the Thief" -- some not so serious -- "Four years of hee-haw."

Gables auctions off memorabilia

·

Walking past the Gables, 114 S. Indiana Ave., there is no glimpse of the rich history of a restaurant that's been around for 60 years in one form or another. Or of the legendary Hoagy Carmichael composing "Stardust" on the piano of the Book Nook, the Gables' predecessor; or how the restaurant -- offering sandwichs and cold sodas -- was so wildly popular among students during the "roaring '20s" and when students and Bloomington residents celebrated three NCAA championships over the frothy beer and the made-from-scratch cuisine.
