Hoosiers begin 13-game homestand

·

If you ask baseball coach Bob Morgan about the Hoosiers' opponents this week, he might start talking about this weekend's series with Penn State, which kicks off the Big Ten regular season.

Campaign finance must be reformed

·

Imagine if there were only one university in Indiana -- IU. And professors were elected every four years by a state-wide vote instead of chosen by administrators. And because there was just one university, these professors would make lots of money and have lots of power.

Spirit of IU is everywhere

·

By the first morning of 81-degree weather and buckets of Long Island ice teas in Fort Lauderdale, I didn't think I would ever come back to Bloomington. Spring break became a glimpse into how life could be. I imagined living it up as a permanent beach bum, hired to dress in skimpy thongs and grace the dance floors of the clubs on their busiest nights of the week. Suddenly journalism seemed like a faded memory and the dirty snow banks seemed like something I would never want to see again.

Mark left on scholars

·

Most people accept when given the opportunity to be commemorated in stone and granite. Few decline the offer to have a building named in their honor. Yet Herman B Wells did exactly that. Faced with countless proposals of the sort, the former IU president and long-time University chancellor adamantly refused, choosing instead to expand on the work he'd done in IU's academic programs. It was understandable that the idea of naming a scholarship in his honor was met with considerable timidity. After all, Wells had declined numerous offers to immortalize his legacy with University developments. He claimed, professor Breon Mitchell said, that his work had only begun.

Wells legacy to live forever

·

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the death of legendary former IU president and University chancellor Herman B Wells. He passed away March 18, 2000, at the age of 97. IU President Myles Brand said Wells' contributions to the University will have a lasting influence. "Chancellor Wells gave unselfishly of his time and his energy until the time of his death," Brand said. "He is deeply missed by the entire IU family.

Applicant field narrows in search for chancellor

·

Long-time Bloomington Chancellor Kenneth Gros Louis leaves big shoes to fill when he retires July 1. One of three administrators -- from three different institutions -- will have the chance to try. Sharon Stephens Brehm, Ohio University provost; Richard Edwards, University of Nebraska-Lincoln senior vice chancellor for academic affairs; and Cora Bagley Marrett, University of Massachusetts-Amherst senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost, are the three finalists to replace Gros Louis.

World economy continues decline

·

The world economy isn't as safe a place now as it was one year ago. The United States is suffering from swooning stock markets and slowing GDP growth while it appears Japan's decade-long stagnation might get worse before it gets better.

Students use spring break for community service

·

WASHINGTON -- For a group of students who traveled to Washington for spring break, back alleys replaced warm, sunny sidewalks and chopping boards and soup kettles replaced surf boards and beach blankets. Instead of soaking in the sun, they prepared meals for the homeless alongside formerly homeless men and women at the D.C. Central Kitchen.
