Office of the Bursar offers to reimburse students for error

Students affected by security breach to receive credit aid

IU has offered to reimburse thousands of students for credit reports stemming from a security breach in the bursar's office last month, University officials said.\nIn early February, a mistake in the bursar's office allowed more than 3,100 graduate and sponsored students' names and Social Security numbers to be downloaded to a computer in Sweden.\nAffected students will be reimbursed for up to three standard credit reports through June 2002, according to the bursar's office Web site, www.indiana.edu/~blbursar.\nThe move is part of the University's response to calls for action from students, IU spokeswoman Susan Dillman said.\n"The University listened to students concerns about this and decided to take this step to help them," Dillman said.\nReimbursements will be handled through the bursar's office. Students must provide documentation of the expense, showing the amount and what was provided.
