Jazz scene picks up steam

·

Two Saturdays ago, Bloomington finally got the chance to hear Joshua Redman perform. The famed saxophonist and his band graced the stage at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre Feb. 16, sponsored by Jazz From Bloomington. But the concert nearly didn't happen at all. Redman was originally slated to perform on Sept. 11, but the show was called off in light of our nation's tragedy. The cancellation almost cost the organization everything.

'Versatile' composer visits

·

The lights dimmed and the screen lit up. As the name Patrick Williams scrolled down onto the screen, the audience applauded. Bloomington residents and IU students gathered Sunday night at the IU Foundation Showalter House to view the Academy Award-winning movie "Breaking Away." The IU Student Foundation sponsored the event in honor of Patrick Williams, who composed the score for the film. He visited IU Friday through Sunday to hold auditions for the Henry Mancini Institute.

Possible terror plot targets embassy

·

ROME -- A hole discovered in a tunnel adjacent to the U.S. Embassy in Rome was large enough to crawl through, and embassy officials said Monday that water pipes leading to the building were circled on a map that was seized along with a cyanide compound in a raid that led to nine arrests. However, the suspects, all Moroccans, have not been cooperating with Italian authorities who lack hard evidence that an attack was being planned on the embassy, the officials said.

Hoosiers in control of Big Ten fate

·

Sunday's game at Michigan State wasn't a must-win. IU lost a 16-point lead, the game and sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. Tonight's game at Illinois is a must-win. IU can't afford anything else if it wants to stabilize chances for its first Big Ten title since 1993. The eternally optimistic Hoosiers have accepted that. Whether they come through on the plan will unfold at 7 tonight in Champaign's Assembly Hall when No. 25 IU and No. 15 Illinois tangle for the second time this season. IU routed the Fighting Illini 88-57 in the first meeting Jan. 26 behind a school, and Big Ten-record, 17 three pointers.

IUSA race begins today; vote online

·

At exactly 12 a.m., the heated race for the victory in IU Student Association elections began. Online voting, which will continue until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, will decide which executive ticket and congress members will take charge of IUSA for the next school year. Junior Chuck Kuntz, a current member of IUSA, said elections in the past have not seen a high voter turnout.

Professors answer Enron questions

·

For weeks, the media and general public have been baffled by and curious about the details that led to Enron scandal. Monday night three professors offered their own opinions and insight into the scandal during a lecture and discussion session titled "Enron: The Big Cookies Do Crumble." The speakers included Michael Metzger, a business law professor, Tim Tilton, a political science professor and director of the Liberal Arts Management Program, and David Greene, accounting and information systems professor.

Lecture deconstructs taboo topic of sex, nudity

·

Drawing gasps and chuckles from a crowd in the fine arts building last night, John Bancroft, director of the Kinsey Institute, delivered his thoughts on the correlation of humor and sex. His lecture, entitled "What's so Funny About Sex?" touched upon the humor in sexual acts, nakedness and human genitalia. Bancroft began the lecture with a disclaimer, stating that he was going to change opinions about sexual acts and humor.

Halasz hopes to extend streak

·

Freshman Murph Halasz has competed in the 200-yard butterfly nine times so far this season. He's won all of them. Now, with the Big Ten championships beginning on Friday, Halasz hopes he can not only extend that streak, but also write himself into the record books by unseating Olympian Mark Spitz for the best time in school history.

Transfer student key for team

·

Junior College transfers have been making major impacts in big time college sports for awhile now. Would the 1990 NCAA champion UNLV Runnin' Rebels have won the basketball championship without Larry Johnson? What about IU's basketball team? Lynn Washington and William Gladness played major roles in the post near the end of Bob Knight's reign.

Tides have changed for Illinois

·

Much has changed for No. 15 Illinois since the Illini were buried by the prolific three-point shooting of the Hoosiers when No. 25 IU beat them 88-57 Jan. 26 at Assembly Hall in Bloomington. And for the Hoosiers, for that matter. Illinois (21-7, 9-5 Big Ten) found itself two games behind IU and Ohio State for first place in the Big Ten after losing to the Hoosiers in January. The Illini had opened their Big Ten season by losing two of their first three games.

Professor recognized for 'unusual achievements'

·

IU professor of cognitive psychology John Kruschke wants to pick students' brains. Or as he refers to it -- their computer programs. "There is a working human mind and I'm trying to reverse engineer it," Kruschke said with a grin. "I want to find out what goes on in the 'software.'"

Synergy

·

It's time to redefine student government at IU. The IU Student Association has always done a good job, but with tireless and enthusiastic leaders it can achieve excellence. Synergy is the ticket that can infuse IUSA with the energy it needs.

Kirkwood

·

IUSA IS CURRENTLY WORTHLESS. I'm sure that this sounds unusual coming from someone who aspires to be the president of it, but presently IUSA does absolutely nothing for the students. The two other tickets have been involved with IUSA for the past two years. During their administration, our school's social scene has been destroyed. It is currently safer to drive home drunk than it is to walk.

What is IUSA?

·

The IU Student Association receives more than $300,000 a year from IU students. Although 100 percent of this money is student produced, only 16 percent of students voted in IUSA elections last year.
