American Airlines Flight 11: A Boeing 767 en route from Boston to Los Angeles American Airlines Flight 77: A Boeing 757 en route from Dulles Airport near Washington to Los Angeles United Airlines Flight 93: A Boeing 757, crashed southeast of Pittsburgh while en route from Newark, N.J. to San Francisco United Airlines Flight 175: A Boeing 767. The flight was bound from Boston to Los Angeles.

'IDS' represents many groups

I was pleased to see the IDS take a step in a fair direction for once. Concerning opinion pieces, I feel that not all viewpoints are expressed; however, the IDS' decision to run Mr. Horowitz's ad was a counterexample to my belief that the IDS isn't representative of all groups on campus.

IU stuns Ball State

After gaining a 3-1 first half advantage, it looked as though the IU field hockey team was on its way to winning its first game of the year. But when Ball State forward Heather Weinhold scored with just 16 seconds left in the half, the Hoosiers appeared to be deflated and searching for an emotional boost. IU freshman goalie Katie Kanara said the team got their motivation from head coach Amy Robertson's halftime speech. "She reminded us that she is sick of it and we're sick of people not thinking we are anybody," Kanara said. "She said to not be surprised with ourselves because we knew that we could play this well." Hoosier freshman midfielder Kim Nash responded to Robertson's words. Nash netted her second goal of the match just 6:24 into the second half to give the Hoosiers a 4-2 advantage. Fellow freshman midfielder Kayla Bashore assisted on Nash's goal.

Scuba divers are often frustrated when the bubbles coming from their systems scare fish. But with the help of a device called a rebreather, divers can come face-to-face with their underwater counterparts without bubbles getting in the way.

Supreme Court gives officers more protection from being sued

Last Monday the Supreme Court passed a ruling giving extra protection to police officers who are sued over the use of excessive force. In a 6-to-3 decision, the court ruled that a lawsuit against a police officer for using excessive force must be dismissed even if the officer's behavior was unreasonable under existing law, as long as a reasonable officer could have made the same mistake under the particular circumstances.

Brand seeks more funding

In the wake of mounting budget restraints, IU's top executive wants state officials to reconfigure their formula for funding higher education. During his annual State of the University address Tuesday, IU President Myles Brand lamented what he called disproportionate state funding for the Indiana's three largest research institutions -- IU, IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis and Purdue.

Where was the U.S. before?

Afghanistan is my country and Afghans are my people. We are not terrorists, but a suffering nation. For years Afghanistan has been afflicted with foreign invasions, starting with the Soviet war in 1979 and now the Talibans. Under the Talibans, Afghans are prisoners in their own country.

The Indiana Student

The Indiana Daily Student has changed in many ways since Feb. 22, 1867 -- when the first issue of the school newspaper ran. IU students wanted a school newspaper for a long time, but IU did not have one because of a lack of funding. Finally, in 1867, about a half a dozen students organized a meeting and a student newspaper was founded, according to a study done last semester by Owen Johnson's C201 journalism class.

'crazy/beautiful' showcases promising young talent

A cheesy teenybopper movie it's not. "crazy/beautiful" tells the story of Nicole Oakley and Carlos Nunez's high school romance. The film is fairly predictable, although it does have its minor twists. But the unexpected comes in the acting, as 3-D characters form out of cookie-cutter roles. Nicole Oakley (Kirsten Dunst, "Get Over It") is the "crazy" rebel child of a California congressman in wealthy Pacific Palisades. Nicole's father never has time for her and her stepmother hates her. Nicole is starved for love, and in its absence acts out of control to get attention. She has no direction in her life until she meets Carlos.

Don't depend on the grades

The Academic Standards Act, proposed by the new IU Student Association executives, isn't likely to take IUSA to a higher level of excellence as its proponents suggest, but will escort many dedicated IUSA representatives out of office in the fall if passed.

Phil and Friends and the Allmans

The Allman Brothers Band and Phil Lesh and Friends combined summer tours Saturday at Verizon Wireless Music Center in Noblesville, Ind. for a nostalgic blend of classic Southern Rock and Grateful Dead jams. While these two bands split the bill, tickets should have read "A Day of Warren Haynes" as he shared his musical gifts between both groups and the show's opener, his own band, Government Mule.
