The film, "Stagecoach," directed by John Ford and released through United Artists in 1939, is the film that was responsible for shooting John Wayne to stardom and putting him on his way to become America's definition of a man's man.

Medical premiums rising for IU workers

Medical premiums will jump 12 to 30 percent next year for IU faculty and staff, a double-digit increase for the third consecutive year. But the impact will be softened, as the University will also raise its health-care contributions by a double-digit rate. The University plans to offer six kinds of medical plans in 2003, and four of them will demand higher premiums than this year, depending on the size of family an employee insures, according to documents published by the IU Human Resources Services. The premium increase will range from $29 to $149 a month. Costs are generally higher for employees insuring their kids, spouse or entire family.

Weighing the costs of expansion

Police vote to unionize to raise wages

INDIANAPOLIS -- Nearly 1,000 state troopers, excise police and state conservation officers overwhelmingly voted to unionize and will ask for their first bargaining session before Christmas, the president of the Indiana State Police Alliance said Monday. Law enforcement officers voted 976-98 in favor of unionizing, with eight ballots voided for failure to follow instructions, Keith Gill said. There were no challenges by either side, Gill said.

GOP control hopes dwindle

INDIANAPOLIS -- Republican hopes of gaining control of the Indiana House dimmed somewhat Monday as a state panel certified a Democratic victory for Rep. Win Moses Jr. in a contested election result.

Keep church and state separate

Last October, a U.S. district court ruled that the display of a Ten Commandments monument at the Alabama Judicial Building violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The monument's foremost patron, Chief Justice Roy Moore of the Alabama Supreme Court, installed the monument in July of 2001. Moore is no stranger to the church/state limelight; he gained renown in 1995 when he refused a court order to remove a Ten Commandments plaque from his courtroom.

Your chins are your problem

I feel really sick. No, it has nothing to do with how I overdosed on holiday gravy at yet another Thanksgiving. And no, it's not because I just got off a Disney cruise, either. What's plaguing me is obese people. Well, not all of them, just the ones involved in the flurry of lawsuits aimed at fast food giants, claiming these restaurants are liable for their weight predicaments. This is stupid, unreasonable and actually quite sad -- reminiscent of an episode of Snoop Dogg's "Doggy Fizzle Televizzle."

Dress code is unneccessary

If tank tops and cut-off T-shirts aren't appropriate at the gym, Nike, Adidas and Champion need to redirect their marketing teams. According to a Nov. 19 story in the IDS, "Cut-offs could be cut out," the Student Recreational Sports Center and the School of Health Physical Education and Recreation are considering a new dress code that would ban "inappropriate" attire such as tank tops and cut-off T-shirts.

Recently my father noted that I take a few shots at IU in my columns. While this might be true, I feel we attend an overall exceptional school. In the interest of defying my dad by showing my positive side, and in light of the recent Thanksgiving holiday, I have compiled a list of reasons why I am thankful to be a student at Indiana University.

Students to cast Union Board votes

The election for next year's Union Board directors starts Tuesday, and some of the candidates have already proposed programs to improve the board. The Union Board will hold an election forum at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Market Place in the Indiana Memorial Union. On Tuesday, the student body can vote online between 12:15 a.m. and 8 p.m., or from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the East Lounge of IMU.

Professor pens new reforms

The Illinois Senate will consider a series of death penalty reforms this week in an attempt to restructure the state's death penalty laws. The reforms include an amendment, written by an IU law professor, that will be the first of its kind in the country. On Tuesday, the senate will discuss the "Fundamental Justice Amendment," authored by IU professor Joseph Hoffmann, according to a statement. The amendment would be the first in the country to grant the state's Supreme Court the authority to reverse any death sentence by determining if the jury made the right decision -- an amendment Hoffmann said is needed in Illinois and throughout the country.

Lighting up the Courthouse

Biology professor Butch Brodie and his wife Suzan walked their daughter Eliza and son Fisher around the downtown area Friday night for the annual "Sparkling Holiday Tradition" celebration. Many families came to the event to see the lighting of the Hospice Community Trees and the Canopy of Lights, which officially begins the holiday season in Bloomington. Brodie said it was the first time his family came to the event. "They have a whole month to be in the holiday mood now," Brodie said.

IU freezes Liberty University

IU picked up an important pair of non-conference victories over the holiday weekend, sweeping undefeated South East No. 4 Liberty University. IU got started nine minutes into the first period Friday. Sophomore forward David Ravensberg sent a pass between the skates of a Liberty defenseman and on the stick of junior forward Rhys Anderson. Anderson cut in front of the net and slammed home the first IU goal of the weekend.

NCAA tournament bid slips after falling to Illinois

Thanksgiving weekend was an eventful one for the women's volleyball team. They posted their first 20 win season since 1999. This season placed head coach Katie Weismiller as IU's most successful coach with 159 career wins, and placing IU squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble with a 10-10 Big Ten record and 20-12 overall. Sitting at 10-9 in the Big Ten, the Nov. 30 match against Illinois was crucial for a guaranteed NCAA Tournament bid, but after the Hoosiers fell in four games their fate would be in the hands of the selection committee.

Coach celebrates 40th win at IU

In the 1970's, women's basketball was an entirely different ballgame. Head coach at the time, Bea Gorton was the fastest to reach the 40-win plateau in just 46 games. This weekend women's head coach Kathi Bennett became the second fastest coach to reach the 40-win plateau and accomplished the feat in 65 games. Bennett wasn't aware it was her 40th win Tuesday night in Alaska when the team defeated Eastern Kentucky 61-49. Some members on the team weren't surprised that Bennett had won 40 games so fast.

Women's sports still lack something

When he woke up on Nov. 21, Steve Hamilton, the athletics director at Hart Lakeshore Academy in suburban Detroit, was not happy. He had just seen his girls' basketball team lose its state tournament playoff opener to Walkerville High School. The loss couldn't have surprised Hamilton since the team hadn't won a game all season. But the score had him seeing red. 115-2. That's right, 115-2.

Hoosiers split tourney in Alaska

Playing in their second tournament in less than a week the IU women's basketball team split a pair of games at the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Ala. The Hoosiers lost in the Championship game against Nevada 68-56 Nov. 27. A day earlier, IU defeated Eastern Kentucky 61-49. In the championship, sophomore guard Jenny DeMuth poured in 26 points and added seven rebounds, but it was not enough as IU suffered its first loss of the season. The Hoosiers fell to 3-1 on the year.

Team downs Irish in second round then falls to UConn

Heading into last Wednesday's second round NCAA Tournament match against Notre Dame, the IU men's soccer team was looking to avenge their last loss on their home turf at Bill Armstrong Stadium. While it was not a pretty game and in the words of Hoosier coach Jerry Yeagley it was not a good performance for IU offensively, the Hoosiers did advance with a 1-0 win over the Irish. No. 5 ranked, but unseeded IU (15-3-2) managed just 10 shots in the game and a meager three in the second half, but one of those three netted the lone goal of the game.
