Postseason mindset begins this weekend

The IU men's soccer team begins its final week before the postseason in an unfamiliar position -- the underdog. The No. 5 Hoosiers travel to College Park, Md., to face No. 3 University of Maryland Saturday night, and welcome No. 1 University of Akron Thursday to wrap up the regular season and prepare for the defense of their national championship.

Hoosiers need to take a 'Stant'

I'm done with this. You can call these past two weeks a hangover for the Hoosiers. But whatever it's been, don't call them moral victories. Moral victories are for the kid chosen last in a pick-up basketball game. Come Saturday, when IU faces Michigan State at Spartan Stadium, there better be a fire lit up the backside of the Hoosier players that is so big it'll be able to save the people from "Lost." "But Mister Playin' It Shaffe," you might ask, "why are you so upset?" Well, it is because I know they can win. You might wonder why I expect so much from a team that is putting on its training wheels against a Tour de France lineup represented by the entire Big Ten.

Switching sides

A year ago, senior John Pannozzo was catching passes out of the backfield and blocking for Hoosier running backs. Junior Troy Grosfield practiced with the special teams unit as a kicker and ran plays with the practice squad. But when IU coach Terry Hoeppner and his staff took over, all of that immediately changed.

Supporting free expression

A recent story in the Indiana Daily Student brought an interesting issue to our attention. How acceptable is being gay in the greek community? Last week, a member of our sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta, participated in a panel titled "Being Greek and Being Gay." We think our chapter was misrepresented in Kacie Foster's article ("Gay and greek: Members speak," Oct. 19).

Campus group to pass out condoms at Kirkwood bars

Five thousand condoms will hit the streets of Bloomington tonight as rape awareness advocates descend on the Kirkwood nightlife to promote safe and consensual sex.

Double standards

I hate double standards. That is probably why I hate the war in Iraq. I recently read an article on www.MSNBC.com talking about how the U.S. soldier death toll has reached 2,000. I sympathize with these soldiers and their families, as I would with soldiers from any nation, for the simple reason that for the large part they are young men and women who otherwise would have been disconnected from the ulterior political motives their nation had to send them into combat.

Morality versus liability

Asbestos envelops every room in Tulip Tree Apartments and Forest, McNutt and Briscoe Quads. The potential consequences of this are mind-blowing. A little bit of background information about asbestos: It's an insulation material that was commonly used in building construction before 1980 (before its carcinogenic characteristics were known). Asbestos itself is not dangerous. The danger develops when the asbestos is damaged, which can occur through water leakages or naïve students who poke pencils into the ceiling from the top bunk of their bed out of sheer boredom. Inhaling damaged asbestos fibers can cause lung damage.

Event to clean up Katrina

IU Habitat for Humanity will be holding its annual Rake-a-Thon this weekend with all proceeds benefiting the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Rake-a-Thon is a weekend-long event in which volunteers rake lawns for local homeowners and collect donations in return.

Israeli missile kills 7 Palestinians in strike against Islamic Jihad

JERUSALEM -- Israel killed seven Palestinians in a missile strike Thursday against Islamic Jihad, and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said he would not meet with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas until he cracks down on armed groups -- a double-edged Israeli response to the latest suicide bombing. Sharon threatened a "broad and relentless" offensive against Palestinian militants, including mass arrests and airstrikes, but security officials said Israel would stop short of a large-scale military operation.

Miers withdraws nomination for high court

President Bush "reluctantly" accepted the withdrawal of Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers Thursday, according to Associated Press reports. The White House said Miers withdrew because of senators' demands to see internal documents related to her role as counsel to the president.

Love blooms in Bloomington; survives Vietnam

"The Well House," by Mark Van Voorhis and Ed Kugler, tells an endearing tale of two students from the Bloomington campus in 1967 who share a bond of love capable of conquering a vicious war, frustrating protests and even death. In a series of love letters sporadically scattered throughout the novel, the authors unveil two loving friends separated by the barriers of family values and a country in turmoil because of the ongoing war in Vietnam.

IUSA survey says students favor athletics fee

Students might favor keeping the athletics fee, according to data compiled by members of the IU Student Association Congress. Congress members were required to distribute 10 surveys regarding student opinions on the athletics fee and the use of paperless class scheduling. Members broke into nine teams to discuss the general consensus of their constituents Tuesday, at the congress's fourth meeting of the year.

IU to dance, honor life of student

More than 1,000 IU students will forego sleep and, instead dance this weekend in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation gymnasium for the 15th annual IU Dance Marathon. The 36-hour event that raises record amounts of money for Riley Hospital for Children -- $468,000 last year -- is the third largest dance marathon in the nation. Members of various student groups, largely from greek organizations, will commence the dance at 8 p.m. Friday night, said IUDM President Chris Carlson.

Founder of online encyclopedia called IU home

Crushing by elephant: a form of execution used in India for more than 4,000 years. That's the most random entry Wikipedia founder Jim Wales said he has ever found on his own Web site. For many IU students, www.wikipedia.org has all the answers, even to the most obscure questions like "What is crushing by elephant?" Some students visit the online encyclopedia every day, some have cited its entries for research papers and others -- and not just a few -- surf it for hours at a time.
