Before the real hubbub of midterm elections, it's time we contemplate our political legacy. Someday, we will all be judged as a society based solely on the public servants we elect, which leaves me wondering what future generations will say about ours. I imagine that if history keeps repeating itself on its dismal loop, we will be known as the generation that took "E! Talk Soup" a little too seriously.

Approve Alito

The Senate should confirm Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. And since there is no doubt that the Senate Republicans will uniformly vote with approval, what I really mean is that the Senate Democrats should not use the filibuster to prevent Alito's confirmation.

Last week, the logic board died in my beloved, broadband-accessing, Wi-Fi-compatible, state-of-the-art-operating-system-sporting Apple laptop. And while Apple has been very good about repairing the problem for free, it has meant that -- until it's fixed -- I've been thrown back into the world of the '90s.

IU students weather storm with early morning sirens

Junior Dave Rooda was sitting outside on the balcony of his fraternity around 3:30 a.m. Sunday when a friend from Bloomfield, a town about a half-hour south of Bloomington, called him to tell him to be careful and seek shelter immediately if he was out. Rooda's friend had been out on the roads fighting to get home through the storms that hit most of southern Indiana and had seen a tree completely uprooted by strong winds, he said.

Bears continue conference climb with 20-17 thriller against Saints

Adrian Peterson and Cedric Benson combined for 137 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown in place of the injured Thomas Jones, and Robbie Gould hit the winning field goal with 6 seconds to go for Chicago. Kyle Orton set up the clincher with a 22-yard, third-down completion on a sideline route to Muhsin Muhammad at the 10-yard line. That allowed Chicago (5-3) to run the clock down to 10 seconds before lining up for the winning kick.

Athletics changes approved

RICHMOND, Ind. -- Despite concerns by the IU Student Association, the board of trustees passed the athletics department's budget plan unanimously Friday. The budget plan sets out to eliminate the athletics department's $6 million budget deficit by 2008 and allows the department to operate without the $30 student athletics fee. The plan also cuts 500 student basketball seats in Assembly Hall, which will be given to donors, and raises the price of student basketball tickets by $4 per game.

Trustees set Jan. 1 chancellor search deadline

RICHMOND, Ind. -- The board of trustees Friday pressured IU President Adam Herbert to name a permanent chancellor for the Bloomington campus by the first week of January but supported the president's decision to reopen the search in the face of mounting faculty criticism.

Committee members say task 'very challenging'

Members of the search committee looking for the next Bloomington campus chancellor said it might be difficult to find a candidate for the position by the new Jan. 1 deadline laid down by the IU board of trustees. The board unanimously passed a resolution Friday directing IU President Adam Herbert and the search committee to quickly find a permanent IUB chancellor and senior vice president for academic affairs for the University by the spring semester.

Hoosiers set back by Ohio State, Penn State

Home court did not have its advantage for the IU women's volleyball team this weekend as the Hoosiers fell to Penn State, 3-0, and Ohio State, 3-1. Although the Hoosiers fell to the two Big Ten foes, coach Katie Weismiller said there were positives her team could take away from the losses.

IU slips past Louisville but falls to No. 12 Wisconsin

The No. 15 IU women's swimming and diving team went 3-1 during its action-packed weekend after facing Louisville, Southern Illinois and No. 12 Wisconsin Friday and Illinois Saturday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Hoosiers now boast a 4-2 record after being tested with two dual meets and one quadrangular meet, which completes the first phase of the season.

IU topples 3 teams for 1st victories

The men's swimming and diving team broke into the win column in a big way Friday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center as the Hoosiers recorded three wins against Louisville, Southern Illinois and No. 25 Wisconsin. Senior Sergiy Fesenko and sophomore Todd Patrick led the Hoosiers with three titles each. Overall, the Hoosiers claimed 12 titles on the day. Men's swimming coach Ray Looze was very satisfied with his team's overall performance.

IU advances to final, falls to Wolverines

For the second time in two weeks, the IU field hockey came up just short in its attempt to capture the first Big Ten title in program history. Last weekend, the Hoosiers missed out on a share of a Big Ten regular season title after an overtime loss to Penn State. Sunday, IU lost to Michigan 3-0 in the Big Ten tournament championship game held in Iowa City, Iowa.

Hoosiers win opener, lose White

Six-foot-nine forward D.J. White cast a larger than normal shadow Friday night, shrouding a 28-point win with a shadow of doubt after he left the halftime locker room on crutches and sat out the second half.

Baby steps

Given its early season performance, it might be difficult for IU fans to remember how young IU's wide receiving corps really is. The Hoosier offense delivered a reminder to that effect Saturday as the IU passing game continued its recent streak of inefficiency marked by key drops and injuries among its receivers in a 42-21 loss to Minnesota. "We made some good catches and some good plays out there," IU coach Terry Hoeppner said. "Unfortunately, we also had a lot of drops. It's something we need to clean up."

The Hoosiers hung their heads because the game was over. Entering the second half with a 14-7 lead and possession of the ball, the offense started a drive to open the third quarter hoping to increase the Gophers' deficit. But by the end of the quarter, many of the 30,656 fans in Memorial Stadium had already gone home. The Golden Gophers had a near perfect third quarter, scoring a touchdown in each of their four possessions to build an insurmountable 34-14 lead by the fourth. "We did not come out as fired up as we were (in the first half)," sophomore quarterback Blake Powers said. "It just shows you cannot have spells like that in this game if you want to compete in this conference."

The GOOD

The Hoosiers celebrated as if the game was over. They raced off the field, led by an energetic coach Terry Hoeppner who pushed and shoved his defensive players in congratulations of their efforts. Hoeppner described the locker room atmosphere as "electric." Heading into halftime of Saturday's game, IU led Minnesota 14-7 and had just stopped the Gophers on a goal line stand.

IU community has a right to know

The recent outcry against IU President Adam Herbert's decision to restart the chancellor search and leave College of Arts and Sciences Dean Kumble Subbaswamy out in the cold perfectly illustrates what interactions between administration, faculty and students are lacking at IU-Bloomington: any degree of transparency.

Bush: Latin America must defend democracy

BRASILIA, Brazil -- President Bush didn't name names Sunday when he called on Latin Americans to boldly defend strong democratic institutions and reject any drift back to the days of authoritarian rule. But his remarks were a clear jab at Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. The leftist leader and friend of Cuba's Fidel Castro spent the past two days hurling criticism at the United States at the Summit of the Americas in Argentina.

Iraqi civilians ﬂee town consumed in violence

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Scores of terrified Iraqis fled a besieged town Sunday, waving white flags and hauling their belongings to escape a second day of fighting between U.S. Marines and al-Qaida-led militants along the Syrian border. U.S. and Iraqi troops battled insurgents house-to-house, the U.S. military said.

France: Restoring order 'absolute priority'

PARIS -- French President Jacques Chirac on Sunday promised arrests, trials and punishment for those sowing "violence or fear" across France -- as the urban unrest that has triggered attacks on vehicles, nursery schools and other targets reached central Paris. Youths set ablaze nearly 1,300 vehicles and torched businesses, schools and symbols of French authority, including post offices and provincial police stations, late Saturday and early Sunday.
