Growth in life sciences to remain high priority in Indiana

Dr. Craig Brater doesn't know if there are any other vice presidents of life sciences around the country. He hasn't even ironed out all the responsibilities of the job. But one thing he does know is that IU's Department of Life Sciences is already strong. He is just looking to making it even stronger.

Liberal arts at heart of IU, allows for well-rounded graduates

IU President Adam Herbert recently told the board of trustees that "the life sciences is now our highest University priority." So where does that leave the liberal arts at IU? University experts say right where it was -- at the heart of the mission of the campus. Although they don't receive as much press as IU's life sciences initiatives, the ever-growing School of Informatics or the consistently prestigious Kelley School of Business, educators say the arts still play a vital role in IU's elite reputation.

INPIRG to hold call-out meeting Tuesday

Today's youth are asked to enter society not only as educated college graduates, but as informed contributors to a democratic society. The Indiana Public Interest Research Group, which seeks to help students accomplish such goals, will be holding a call-out meeting Tuesday to recruit members and discuss this semester's campaign focuses.

Student fees to be allocated by committee

Saturday was a long day for the members of the Committee for Fee Review. While students and faculty members were at the IU vs. Purdue basketball game -- or watching it on TV -- the members of this committee were fielding requests from six of the 13 campus organizations that receive money from student fees.

PRIDE Film Festival makes debut in residence halls

IU residence halls will host a new addition to the PRIDE Film Festival this week. While this is the third year of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender film festival in Bloomington, this is the first year the IU residence halls will screen festival films.

Vacant Kappa Sigma house to be demolished

An 80-year-old house used by the Kappa Sigma fraternity and visited by musician and IU alumnus Hoagy Carmichael might be demolished. The house, at 1503 E. Third St., east of Lambda Chi Alpha, was built for Kappa Sigma in 1926. IU bought the house in 1964, and it has not been used for about 10 years. University officials have, in the past, considered using the house for offices or other University functions, but it was deemed too expensive to renovate the house.

Monroe County Fairgrounds loses land

Monroe County plans to construct a new park area on a piece of land that the Monroe County Fair Board has been using since 1955. This would cut fair parking areas and force the board to move a riding arena, lights and recreational vehicle hookups that currently occupy land.

Bin Laden: Al-Qaida preparing new attacks

CAIRO, Egypt -- Al-Jazeera on Thursday aired an audiotape from Osama bin Laden, who says al-Qaida is making preparations for attacks in the United States but offers a truce on "fair" but undefined conditions.
