In 1884, Fifth Street, now known as the main drag for the IU campus, almost wasn't named Kirkwood Avenue. Instead, many town folks wanted to name the street University Avenue while East Sixth Street was to be renamed Kirkwood Avenue.

Dennis Severns, the father of Cpl. Scott Severns, walks into St. Matthew Cathedral in South Bend, Ind., Friday, April 28, 2006, for the funeral of his son. Scott Severns was shot during a robbery attempt Friday, April 21, and died Sunday. A 17-year-old accused of fatally shooting the off-duty police officer during the attempted robbery was charged with murder.

IU bookstore offers online price quotes for students selling back their used texts

It's the end of the year -- time for students to stand in line to return text books. This year the IU bookstore has developed a new tactic that will make it much easier and more efficient for students during the hassle of finals week. A new feature on the bookstore's Web site allows students to see how much their books are worth before they even go to the store.

UPDATE: Two Hoosiers drafted back-to-back

Former IU football players Victor Adeyanju and Isaac Sowells were picked back-to-back in the fourth round of the NFL Draft Sunday. The 6-foot-3, 324-pound Sowells went to the Cleveland Browns with the 112th pick overall, while the speedy defensive end Adeyanju was nabbed by the St. Louis Rams with the very next pick. Adeyanju and Sowells worked out for teams at the NFL Combine held in Indianapolis and met with several teams who had potential interest in the players. Both also expressed their desire to be drafted by a team that was close to home. On Sunday, both got their wish.

Officials assess response to crash that killed 5 students

A bouquet of flowers marks the pit in the ground made when a plane slammed into the muddy earth at speeds exceeding 150 miles per hour, claiming the lives of five IU students. Robert Samels, Zachary Novak, Garth Eppley, Georgina Joshi and Chris Carducci were killed when the six-seat Cessna flown by Joshi crashed during a final approach for landing at the Monroe County Airport. The five IU Jacobs School of Music students were returning home from a community choir rehearsal in Lafayette. When the plane disappeared from radar around 11:40 p.m., a rescue operation followed bringing together local emergency services.

What if Nintendo was good for your brain? Video games would improve things other than your hand-eye coordination. Perhaps parents would encourage kids to use them to keep their brains sharper than those of non-users.

IU ends 2-week break at Penn Relays

After a week-long hiatus, the men's track team returns to action this weekend at the Penn Relays. In its 112th consecutive year, the event boasts competitors from across the nation, including Louisiana State University, the University of Michigan and Cornell University. More than 425 races will be run during approximately 33 hours of competition beginning on Thursday and culminating on Saturday. Thus far, six athletes and the 4x400 meter relay team have met NCAA regional-qualifying marks in their respective fields. The list includes freshman Jeff Coover in the pole vault, junior David Neville in both the 200 and 400-meter runs, junior Stephanos Ioannou in the 100-meter hurdles and sophomore Ryan Smith in the 400-meter hurdles.

IU heads to Princeton for weekend tournament

After finishing second in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division tournament last weekend, the No. 16 IU water polo team will attempt to earn a bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament at the CWPA Eastern Championship at Princeton University this weekend.
