Power is sexy

·

Sexual harassment is new to our legal and cultural lexicon, the first cases happening as recently as the 1980s. These cases put the fear of God into some male employers and workers. In order to avoid the reality of power relations in the workplace, women who file sexual harassment lawsuits are routinely derided as uppity, politically correct women who can’t handle a joke.

Cheating our athletes

According to recent reports, cheating among NCAA athletes is not only in the news again but it’s being subsidized by their respective universities. At Florida State University, Texas Tech and the University of Minnesota, among others, it has been reported that the special tutoring programs for top athletes are being encouraged not to merely help the athletes, but to actually write essays and do homework for them.

Beneficial ban

·

If in the following weeks students feel the ground begin to shake and see a few bricks come loose from campus buildings, they should not be alarmed. Indiana isn’t exactly along the San Andreas Fault. It’s no earthquake. Rather, it’s the adult smokers of Monroe County grumbling about the limits being placed on their right to privacy and the dangers of government limitation.

Recycling rivals

·

As a loyal School of Public and Environmental Affairs student, it kills me to have to say what I’m about to say. No, really, this is not easy for me, especially given the history of the rivalry between my beloved SPEA and the famously infamous Kelley School of Business. In fact, I’ll probably regret saying this the second I put it down on paper.

Rocktober

·

This month, an incredible amount of great live music is coming to Bloomington and the surrounding area – so much so that I’ve taken to calling it “Rocktober” (often with a simulated echo, and always to the embarrassment of everyone around me).

Home atmosphere leads to wins for IU womens tennis

·

In their first home tournament of the year, the No. 24 IU women’s tennis team racked up wins on their home court. The team competed in the Hoosier Classic this weekend, where they won three singles flights out of a possible 10. Juniors Alba Berdala, Sigrid Fischer and Stephanie Heller all reached the singles finals and won the last match of their flights.

Getting their chance

·

As the IU football team’s usual stars continued to fill up the stat sheet Saturday, the Hoosiers got a big hand from some unusual suspects on offense, defense and special teams.

Laughing with the Hoosiers

·

For a good portion of the last decade, IU football has been little more than a punch line. But Saturday the Hoosiers jumped on top early, and the joke was on their opponent.

Managers of Nick’s, Yogi’s make baseball wager

·

When a college student wagers on a sporting event, it’s usually not a bet of substantial value. But two Bloomington bars made a bigger wager on the Cleveland Indians-New York Yankees American League Division Series playoff series Thursday night.

‘Dog party’ beats Sunday heat

·

Deirdre Stanton cooled herself off in the shade after watching her dog Brie play in the hoses and kiddie pools that made up the canine water park.

Bash at the Back Alley

Nicoles Williams, grinning from ear to ear, tossed the heavy ball down the lane, knocking down six pins in its wake.

Hoosiers take it to Gophers, win 40-20

·

Chants of “Terry Hoeppner” rained down from the few students remaining in the stands. Several IU football players triumphantly hoisted their crimson helmets to the sky, where they met the October afternoon sun. And for the first time since 1994, the IU football team was 5-1.
