‘Vagina Monologues’ to raise funds for women’s shelter

Started just 12 years ago with a performance of “The Vagina Monologues” on a New York stage, V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women and girls, is now celebrated all over the world. This Friday, IU will carry on the campaign to end violence with its own production of “The Vagina Monologues.”

He has become a local celebrity. You don’t have to look far to see his 1960s-inspired “pop art” paintings and portraits. You can pass his artwork while making your daily stroll through the Union. Joel Washington, a local artist and Indiana Memorial Union custodian, celebrates his 50th birthday with a 50-work exhibit at City Hall.

Bringing Ghana to Vancouver

Friday, champions of snow and ice from around the globe will descend on Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Although the Olympic Games are billed as the embodiment of global diversity, many warm-weather countries have no winter athletes to offer. In Africa and South America, participation in the Winter Olympics is rare, and success is even rarer. Enter Kwame Nkrumah-Acheampong, the inexperienced underdog whose story is sure to turn skeptics into fans.

Online courses provide alternative classroom

If those eight cups of coffee have left you feeling so awake that it would be a shame to not be productive, it might be a good time to go to class — even if it’s 3 a.m. Online classes are not new – there are universities that offer entire degrees solely through the Internet. At IU, though, space constraints and availability are making online classes a bigger part of the curriculum.

Report: Hundreds forced into labor, sex in Ohio

About 1,000 American-born children are forced into the sex trade in Ohio every year and about 800 immigrants are sexually exploited and pushed into sweatshop-type jobs, a new report on human trafficking in the state said Wednesday.

Art fair ‘expresses soul,’ raises money

The Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center Grand Hall echoed with slaps, thuds and chants Wednesday when four dancers in rubber rain boots fixed with loose bottle caps led a crowd in a traditional African Gumboot Dance. The dance was just one part of the eighth-annual Black History Month Art Fair sponsored by the FASE Mentoring Program, the African American Arts Institute and the Office of Multicultural Initiatives.

Rock-opera musical tells story of Jesus’ last week on earth

On Wednesday, the IU Auditorium hosted an audience ready to see Jesus rock. “Jesus Christ Superstar” opened Wednesday to an appreciative crowd eager to escape the frigid weather outside. The show, one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous productions, is a retelling of the final days of Jesus’ life – beginning with the preparation for his arrival in Jerusalem and ending with his Crucifixion.

Buckeyes roll past Hoosiers

Basketball isn’t known as a contact sport, and the more passive team lost in IU’s 69-52 faltering against Ohio State on Wednesday. Similar to the first contest on Jan. 6 in Columbus, Ohio, IU struggled against the larger, more physical Buckeyes.
