Major Taylor deserves respect

·

Team Major Taylor deserves respect, despite anything that could be said to the contrary. No other team in the Little 500 field had to go through so much official red tape and so much unofficial hatred spread by some of the other riders. Major Taylor has dealt with disqualification, arbitration, controversy, paperwork, a competitor's walkout during practice and lawsuit filed just before the event to keep the team out of the race.

An open letter to Dean McKaig

·

Enough is enough. As much as I respect your position of authority, as a student, I question your refusal to apply campus rules equally. You have allowed a group of war-protesters to violate a University code. Perhaps you need a refresher. The code reads, "Overnight camping is not a form of expression and, therefore, permission will not be granted to cook or live in overnight structures." Certainly seems to me that you've granted these protesters permission.

Experience equals a better future

·

I recently interviewed for an internship. The editor-in-chief had to choose between me, a freshman at IU who writes opinion columns, and a junior at the University of Missouri, who reported stories, fact-checked and even had experience in publishing. Guess who got the internship?

Two students studying at Israel's Hebrew University will stay in the Middle East, in spite of concern from the Department of Overseas Study. After the recent outbursts of violence in Israel, an advisory group of senior IU international administrators and Jewish Studies faculty decided to ask the students to come home. Despite these concerns, junior Joe Osgood and senior Joel Goldsmith have decided to stay.

Fire raises new safety concerns

Students residing in the dorms should be safe from fire for the remainder of the year, officials at the IU Physical Plant said. The April 7 dorm fire at DePauw University has raised questions about the lengths IU is taking to ensure safe living environments for students on campus. The blaze at DePauw injured three fire fighters and cost estimated damages of $1 million.

Ladies First present year-end show

·

Tonight, IU's premier women's a cappella group, Ladies First, will perform for the last time this year with all of its members. For those who are unfamiliar with the group, Ladies First began three years ago, when Natalie Perkins and Sarah Gibson founded the group in the fall of 1999 with the assistance of Walter Shilanskas, director emeritus of Straight No Chaser. The group of 10 women gained sponsorship from the IU Alumni Association in spring of 1999.

Flying family defies gravity

·

Members of the Bloomington High Flyers fold and contort as they stack themselves three-deep on top of one another to create a grotesquely beautiful human pyramid. New age music crackles out of a chalk-coated stereo, providing a complement to the superhuman strength required to defy gravity and every other law of nature.

Scandals prompt meeting

·

VATICAN CITY -- Even before formal talks begin Tuesday, American prelates are already at odds on how to deal with the sex abuse scandal. A main source of division appears to be the question of whether Boston's Cardinal Bernard Law should resign.

Minnesota's strong pitching tandem of Piper Marten and Angie Recknor shut down the IU offense in the Hoosiers' trip to Minneapolis for a pair of games over the weekend. Marten and Recknor each pitched shutouts while limiting the IU hitters to just seven hits in 12 innings of play. The Hoosiers were also scheduled to play Wisconsin in a doubleheader Sunday, but the games were canceled because of inclement weather.
