A Boston native visiting Bloomington died Saturday afternoon after jumping off a two-story apartment building early Friday morning. \nJohn Wilfred Howard Simard, 21, died from resulting injuries at Bloomington Hospital at 2:15 p.m. Saturday. \nAt 3:35 a.m. Friday, an IU Police Department officer spotted a silver car speeding down the wrong side of 17th Street, Lt. Jerry Minger said. \nThe officer followed the car to the Dunnhill Apartments, where Simard jumped out of the car and ran into building H, in the southwest area of the complex, attempting to escape police. \nAfter a chase on foot, Simard pried open a second-floor window with a kitchen knife and climbed up onto the roof of the building, threatening to jump off, according to an IUPD statement.\nBloomington Police and Fire Departments were summoned to the scene, trying to talk Simard down from the roof for about an hour. While Bloomington firemen were mounting an adjacent roof, Simard ran toward the edge of the roof and jumped off, falling an estimated 35 feet to a parking lot below.\nAn examination by the Monroe County coroner will determine whether any substances were in Simard's body at the time of his jump, Minger said. Police will also use the coroner's findings to determine whether Simard's jump was a suicide attempt or an attempted flight from police.\nRepresentatives from Dunnhill Apartments could not be reached for comment.
