Auditorium boasts variety

The IU Auditorium, which has consistently brought well-known acts to campus, has announced its 2002-2003 lineup. With Broadway hits such as "CATS" and high-energy shows such as "Bring In Da' Noise, Bring In Da' Funk," the IU Auditorium hopes to provide entertainment for everyone. Among the shows to come to IU in the fall, patrons will have the chance to groove to popular Bee Gees hits in "Saturday Night Fever" and revisit their childhood dreams with "Cinderella."

IU left with $84,339 hotel bill

When the basketball court had cleared, and the Final Four was all over, IU was left with an $84,339 hotel bill. Jeff Fanter, director of media relations for the athletics department, said fans of each school in the Final Four were given hotel rooms to fill.

Pope speaks out against sexual abuse: a sin and a crime

VATICAN CITY -- Pope John Paul II told American church leaders Tuesday that there was no place in the priesthood "for those who would harm the young," saying sex abuse by priests in the United States was both a sin and a crime. The cardinal of Los Angeles said the pontiff had taken a strong step in favor of "zero-tolerance" for abusive priests. But he and other Americans at the meeting said there was no discussion of the possible resignation of Boston's Cardinal Bernard Law, accused of mishandling sex abuse cases.

Hip-hop star Nelly blares from the tiny computer speakers and rebounds around the 10-by-12-foot dorm room with the door shut to ward off any curious resident assistants. It's Saturday night in IU's Ashton Quad, and freshmen women and men are drinking, dancing and hooking up.

Companies and students awarded for thinking green

Environmentally conscience students of the Kelley School of Business honored recipients of the inaugural Kelley Green Awards Monday. This award series is the result of the Kelley School's Environmental Policy Committee's desire to promote a program for and by the students.

Hoosiers approach end of season

The men's golf team's season has been a long roller-coaster ride. Now, with just one tournament left to play before the Big Ten tournament tees off, there is little space left on the track before the Hoosiers learn their postseason fate.

3rd place enough for championships

The Hoosiers have advanced to the Eastern Championships after taking third place at this past weekend's Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Championship. IU went 3-1 during the weekend.

Hoosiers split with Cardinals

The IU softball team split its doubleheader with in-state rival Ball State on Tuesday. The Hoosiers claimed the opener 1-0 behind a strong performance by freshman pitcher Katie Witham, who recorded her second shutout of the season. But Ball State (16-18) overcame a late deficit to beat IU (13-28-1) 4-3 in the nightcap.

IU defeats Blue Jays

IU utilized its bench in defeating the Ontario Blue Jays 7-4 Tuesday night at Sembower Field. The Blue Jays, an 18-and-under touring baseball team from Ontario, Canada, are the one exhibition opponent IU is allowed to play this year.

Scared to face life after college

I have had a sinking feeling in my stomach for the past couple days, a feeling that has only grown worse, not better, with time. It's not a prolonged hangover, a case of the flu or any other illness cured by medicine. The cause of my discomfort is the sheer fact that my time here at IU is drawing to a close, and I'm not quite sure how to deal with all the emotions that come along with it.

Beware of McCarthyism

As the stack of post-Sept. 11 legislation and regulation continues to grow, it seems the president may be treading toward an era of intellectual McCarthyism. In a directive issued in October, he proposed to ban "certain international students from receiving education and training in sensitive areas, including areas of study with direct application to the development and use of weapons of mass destruction."

Judge refuses TV execution suit

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A judge refused to delay Friday's execution of convicted killer Alton Coleman, despite his lawyers' arguments that a closed-circuit transmission would turn his death into a "spectator sport." Coleman's lawyers were considering appealing the decision and also on Tuesday asked a federal appeals court to delay the execution.
