Team manager adds new dimension

·

You won't see a record by his name, or even proof of him having played. He works about three and a half hours a day, six days a week and cleans out the grubby water jugs, shags tennis balls and destroys the strings on the rackets, then, restrings them. These are just a few of the duties performed by junior Brian Van Handle, team manager of the IU men's tennis team. He seldom gets noticed, but the team would be at a loss without him.

Hoosiers edge Wright State with run in eighth inning

·

The baseball team headed to Dayton, Oh., for a matchup with the Wright State Raiders in an out of conference battle. In a closely contested battle, IU managed to squeeze out a victory by pushing across the winning run in the eighth inning to win 4-3. The win pushes the Hoosiers' record to 27-8 heading into a big weekend at home.

GARY -- An Indian tribe that wants to bring land-based casinos to Indiana is being aggressively courted by Mayor Scott King, whose city is already home to two riverboat casinos. King said Tuesday his discussions with the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma began in January and are advancing to a formal stage.

Students should go to Israel

·

Right now IU is standing at a crossroads. A number of faculty are weighing the decision whether to let students study in Israel next year. Our University has a long-standing relationship with Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Every year IU sends a number of students to study in Jerusalem for a year or a semester. But unfortunately, next year IU students may not be studying in Israel because of the violence.

Popping the right kind of pills

·

When I was young, I thought Flintstone chewable vitamins were the greatest invention next to bubblegum flavored medicine. I used to pop three or four when my mom wasn't looking. I continued the habit until the pills changed from colorful prehistoric people to ordinary white horse pills. My addiction soon changed from vitamins to cherry fruit roll ups and I stopped taking the healthy pills.

Riders should focus on race

·

During a Tuesday practice race for the men's Little 500, 32 riders laid their bikes down on the track and walked off. The motionless bikes were a symbol of the unfairness many equate with the decision to let Team Major Taylor rider Joshua Weir participate in Saturday's race. Weir should have been disqualified. He attained Category I riding status -- a feat that excludes such seasoned riders from this intramural event. This information was not clear when he was granted riding privileges in a binding arbitration hearing. Once his Category I status was confirmed, another arbitration could have occurred with Team Major Taylor's consent. It was not granted.

Guster show sweet

·

Apparently Nattie Light is IU's beer of choice, according to the audience at the Guster show on Tuesday night. Sweet. While not my personal favorite, "a hot Nattie Light if you want to have a good time" made for a quite witty and entertaining interaction between the band and the audience.

O.A.R rocks the house...and the pavement

·

One line from Of A Revolution's opening number sums up the magnitude of their performance Tuesday night at the Kappa Sigma house: "What can you say about this weather? It ain't gonna rain on this parade."

Northern Florida quintet plays bayou style for Bluebird Nightclub

·

Northern Florida isn't known for much. But can you blame it? Referred to as the "blackwater region of florida," it is a land with an alligator population almost as large as its human population -- densely occupied by miles of swamps and marshes which host the region's alligator community. It is here the feet-stomping, chair-rocking sounds of Mofro originated. And Monday night at the Bluebird Nightclub, they treated fans to an hour and a half of southern-fried blues, soul and funk.

A very special birthday is coming up. April 20 will be the 30th anniversary of one of IU\'s most prominent musical groups, the IU Soul Revue, and the highlight of the weekend will be -- of course -- a concert.
