Hard rains flood Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Torrential rains caused flooding in several parts of Indonesia on Wednesday, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes and killing three people on the tourist island of Bali. Water spilled over a dam in Northern Bali, sweeping three villagers to their deaths and triggering a landslide, said police spokesman Lt. Col. Yatim Suyatmon. Three other people are missing. In the capital, at least 13 people died during the weekend as a result of the floods.

Athletes' comments in check

The mission of the IU Athletics media relations department is to act as a liaison for student-athletes and the media, said media relations director Jeff Fanter. But in an e-mail obtained by the IDS, Fanter told several sports information directors what student-athletes should be saying to members of the media.

Hoosiers hope to add more qualifiers

After their best-ever Big Ten conference finish in Ann Arbor, Mich., last weekend, the IU women's swimming team looks to qualify more swimmers for the NCAA Championships this weekend at the Indiana Open. Sunday's event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center. The Hoosiers play host to other competitors in the last-chance meet for swimmers to post qualifying times for the NCAA Championships. The NCAAs will be held March 21-23 in Austin, Texas.

IU expects $1.9 million from parking violations

In November, a recommendation was made to the Transportation and Parking Advisory Committee to raise the price of parking tickets by $5 and to give the revenue to the IU Auditorium. Recent criticism stemming from the proposal has put pressure on the University to explain where parking ticket revenues go. The parking ticket price increase was proposed to the committee by Bruce Jacobs, associate vice chancellor of administrative affairs for Residential Programs and Services. He made the proposal with hopes of bridging the $200,000 gap between what students pay for shows at the IU Auditorium (which are discounted), and the actual prices of show tickets.

Professors provide insight to attack

For Associate Professor of History David Pace, the horror of Tuesday's events hit especially close to home. Upon hearing of Tuesday's attack on New York City's World Trade Center, his thoughts immediately turned to his daughter, who lives a mere two blocks away from the eye of the storm. His daughter is fine, he reports -- yet he said he fears the shaken nation may not be. Pace equated Tuesday's events to the assassination of John F. Kennedy -- an event of international intrigue evoking an unprecedented outpouring of emotion and public sentiment.

Bloomington discovers ideals of 'Simply Living!'

Some talked about mud. Others played in mud. Thus was the balance of fun and learning present at the weekend's Simply Living! festival in Third Street Park. Saturday brought in a large crowd, often creating packed workshops with as many as 60 people in one small room, as was the case with Steven Conrad's talk about "Solar Home Design." The workshops were spread across four rooms in two buildings, but it didn't seem to faze the participants, who seemed to be determined to have a good time at the environmental extravaganza. Many participants from prior years found themselves returning to Simply Living! because of its environment.

Greetings to re-open in mid-July

One of Kirkwood's favorite gift shops will re-open its doors to browsing customers soon. After a fire last February destroyed the store and its merchandise, owners of Greetings, a popular novelty and greeting card store, are looking forward to opening for business before fall semester begins.

Recently in Tennessee, voters mobbed the state capitol and stopped last-minute legislation to institute an income tax. A small New Hampshire town of 850 wants to secede from the state to prevent the misuse of property taxes.

Player of the Week

IU has the Big Ten Player of the Week routine figured out. For the fifth consecutive week, the Player of the Week has been either a Hoosier or someone from a team that played IU (16-7, 8-2 Big Ten) during the week for which he was awarded. This time, senior forward Jarrad Odle gobbled up the honors, after posting back-to-back double-doubles in No. 22 IU's victories over Iowa and Louisville. Against Iowa Feb. 5, Odle shut down Hawkeye forward Reggie Evans for the second time this season, holding the 6-foot-8 Evans to eight points on 3-of-11 shooting. Meanwhile, Odle scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Atlantic fleet deploys to defend eastern seaboard

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The military boosted security across the country to the highest levels Tuesday after terrorists crashed planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. "We have been attacked like we haven't since Pearl Harbor," Adm. Robert J. Natter said at the Norfolk Navy base. President Bush ordered the nation's military to "high-alert status," and vowed to "hunt down and punish those responsible" for the attacks, which were expected to carry a high death toll.

Ashcroft promises aggressive use of new terrorism law

Attorney General John Ashcroft ordered federal prosecutors Friday to use new anti-terrorism powers to track down terrorists by intercepting their Internet and telephone communications and financial transactions. Ashcroft issued orders to 94 U.S. Attorney's offices and 56 FBI field offices after President George W. Bush signed a sweeping anti-terrorism bill into law.
