Williams sisters to return in January

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- Serena and Venus Williams, each sidelined with injuries since July, plan to return to the WTA Tour in January. Serena is the defending champion at the Australian Open, which begins Jan. 19. She hasn't played since defeating older sister Venus for the Wimbledon title in July.

In a crowded room on the corner of Seventh and Morton streets, amid a sea of red "Mark Kruzan for Mayor" shirts and the smell of fried chicken, Democratic mayoral candidate Mark Kruzan announced triumphantly, "Thirty-two years of Democrats is not enough!" Kruzan defeated Republican Fred Prall Tuesday night by a margin of 3,037 votes, assuring a continuance in the 32-year Democratic mayoral winning streak.

Bill would recognize former mayor

U.S. Sens. Evan Bayh and Richard Lugar have proposed a bill to the Senate to change the name of Bloomington's Woodbridge Post Office to the Francis X. McCloskey Post Office Building, in honor of the former Bloomington mayor and U.S. congressman. McCloskey, who was diagnosed with bladder cancer in September 2002, died Sunday.

Chemistry professor Milos Novotny will be awarded the Tracy M. Sonneborn Award tonight at the Indiana Memorial Union. The award is presented to IU faculty members who have contributed not only to the University and the community, but to national and international groups, as well.

Committee to discuss IU camp

A task force to investigate IU Alumni Associations' Camp Brosius meets for the first time at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Bryan Hall. The 12-person committee, appointed by IU President Adam Herbert and headed by IU Budget Director Steve Keucher, was appointed by the president two weeks ago to make a recommendation about the fate of the summer camp.
