The IU women's basketball team (4-2) will finally get to see some action on its home hardwood when it faces Maine (4-2) at 7 p.m. tonight in Assembly Hall. The game will end a 19-day absence for the Hoosiers from their home court. "It feels good," junior guard Jenny DeMuth said. Hoosiers ready for tough foe

·

Two very different teams with the same 3-3 record will fight for their fourth win of the season Saturday at Assembly Hall. IU will host Butler in a contest that historically shows IU as the favorite. The Hoosiers lead the series 34-12. Sophomore guard Marshall Strickland said the team's confidence is high after their 66-63 road win at Notre Dame on Wednesday night but adds they aren't taking the Butler game lightly. "We went into Notre Dame thinking we could win it," Strickland said.

We've got a winner

·

Last week, I complained about the lack of a winning team at IU. But that was before the discovery of Ryan Tapak. And I also managed to neglect the IU men's soccer team. I admit, I grew up a soccer-hater. I thought soccer players were just pansies that couldn't handle a real tackle and it was a game for them durn furinurs anyway.

·

IU fans traveling to Columbus, Ohio, for this weekend's College Cup are advised to proceed with caution due to recent shootings off Interstate 270. A total of 15 cases, including one fatality, have been reported, and all are believed to be related, according to Columbus authorities. The NCAA and the Franklin County Sheriff's Department are working together to ensure safety for the teams and their fans. "Basically, we had a conference call with all four teams where we had a person from the County Sheriff's Department to fill everybody in on what has been going on and to answer any questions the schools would have," said Mark Bedics, media coordinator for the Division I Soccer Championship.

Dead Week adds stress

·

It comes but once per semester with the promise of a break from the rigors of a normal school week, but for many students, "dead week" is just as stressful as any other time of year.

Warm winter trends

·

Throwing fashion to the wind to stay warm is a very practical approach to winter. Then the holiday sales come, and I black out in the mall. I usually give in to winter trends. As I look down at my hands clad in lambswool hand warmers, I am thinking: "why did I buy these?" They are really pretty, but they serve no function -- they don't actually cover the fingers.

Dow's rise might forecast future economic growth

·

IU Business professor Robert Klemkosky offered insight into the Dow Jones industrial average's brief foray above the 10,000 mark Tuesday for the first time in 18 months. Although reaching the 10,000 mark is promising for stock owners, the number itself doesn't hold a lot of significance, said Klemkosky, the Fred T. Greene professor of finance at the Kelley School of Business. "Ten thousand really doesn't mean much," he said. "It has been there before, but it gets a lot of attention because people get excited about that number."
