IU hosts No. 9 Duke

Off to their best start since the spring of 2002, Lin Loring's IU Hoosiers (4-1) face their toughest test of the year as they play host to the No. 10 Duke Blue Devils Sunday. Duke is the third of 15 ranked opponents the Hoosiers will face this season. After knocking off then-No. 10 Tennessee and playing a tough road match against No. 18 Arizona State, IU will have to bear down to protect their home courts from one of the most talented teams in the country.

RIVALRY on the road

IU and Purdue have more in common than their game on Saturday. The teams both carry two home Big Ten losses. The Hoosiers' two losses came to Illinois and Iowa, while Purdue suffered defeats to Ohio State and Northwestern. Now IU (12-9, 6-4) hopes to hand Purdue (15-8, 5-5) yet another loss in West Lafayette. The contest takes place only three days after Purdue suffered its latest home loss to Northwestern 40-39. IU coach Mike Davis said it is hard to explain how teams like IU and Purdue have two home losses and also how Purdue only scored 39 points in their contest with Northwestern. Davis said Purdue coming off a home loss could work for or against the Hoosiers.

Bill targets alcohol containers

A bill amending existing Indiana open container legislation that passed the State Senate in late January will move on for consideration in the House Public Policy Committee this month.

Student hacker suspect charged

The Campus Judicial Board has officially filed charges against the student accused of hacking into IU's Emergency Web site and posting a false emergency alert last month. Sophomore Benjamin Brodsky is scheduled to have a judicial conference March 1 and is charged with "disorderly conduct which interferes with teaching, research, administration, or other University or University-authorized activity" and "violation of other published University policies or rules," according to a letter Brodsky received from the Judicial Board.

Ladies First: beyond the etiquette

Their voices may be angelic, but that doesn't mean you won't hear them singing Madonna's "Like A Virgin" at Bears Place on Thursday nights. The women of Ladies First, often thought of as the female version of Straight No Chaser, are a 13-member a cappella group sponsored by the IU Alumni Association for one blatant reason -- they can sing like angels.

Student ID numbers to change

IU's number is up. Following in the footsteps of other state schools, IU is planning to replace its student identification number system so students will no longer be identified by their social security numbers. Instead, students will be assigned random 10-digit numbers. The change is being made as IU converts to the Student Information System software the University began running this spring, said IU Spokeswoman Jane Jankowski.

MPRI treats its first patients

The future of cancer treatment arrived at Bloomington this week with the opening of the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute. The MPRI began treating its first patient Wednesday, using an advanced form of radiation involving the acceleration of protons, which can kill tumors untreatable by conventional radiation.

Scholars begin stay at IU

Eight of the 25 Iraqis awarded J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarships in January arrived in Bloomington Feb. 6. Since then, they have been busy searching for accommodation, attending orientation classes and adjusting to their new environment. The recipients of the Fulbright Scholarship come from all over Iraq and represent several of the various ethnic groups in the country.

SBC replacing campus phone lines

The large yellow tents, trucks and machinery that have lined 10th street for the last few weeks have caught the eye of passers-by and increased their curiosity as to what work is being done. Southern Bell Company workers are splicing nearly 5,000 underground cable lines and replacing them with new ones. During the repairs, phone service will only be affected for about three seconds.

Pro-Aristide militants crush protest

Heat rises on mercury issue

The informational event was part of their Mercury Awareness Week.
