Two big men equal two big problems

·

Like eighth graders bullying first graders at recess, Ohio State University's big men dominated undersized IU inside. The Buckeyes, led inside by sophomore Terence Dials and senior Velimir Radinovic, outscored the Hoosiers 40-16 in the paint and were the go-to guys down the stretch in OSU's 59-56 win Saturday night at Assembly Hall.

From bad to worse

·

Pardon me. I forgot to mention that I was wearing my rose-colored glasses when I wrote that IU was NIT-bound on Friday. After losing back-to-back home games to the two worst teams in the Big Ten, it seems likely IU will be left out of the postseason altogether for the first time since 1977. And it may turn into the first losing campaign for the Hoosiers since the 1969-70 season.

In March 2003, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded the IU Art Museum with a $30,000 grant for the conservation of Stuart Davis' "Swing Landscape." Work began on the painting last July and is expected to be completed this spring.

Be wary of bus fees

·

The IU Student Association Congress has approved the Universal Bus Pass Initiative, which would increase student transportation fees an extra $30 next year, allowing any student to ride any campus bus by showing a student ID. The proposal now goes to the board of trustees and, if approved, could be enacted as early as next fall.

Bloomington offers weekly volunteer opportunities

·

The volunteer opportunities offered by the vast number of organizations and institutions throughout Bloomington leave students with innumerable occasions to get involved and give back to the community. The Bloomington Volunteer Network works with IU as well as other businesses, agencies and non-profit corporations to promote these opportunities. Here are a few opportunities that are calling for volunteers this month.

With a little help from 'pixie dust'

·

Two girls playing Chinese lanterns performed back flips across the stage. Constantly bounding to the beat of the music and singing in unison, they seemed like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum -- but with far better athletic skill. They provided an interlude of excitement for the viewer.

Play sheds light on women's plight

·

In Juarez, Mexico, a town just south of the border to the U.S., 300 women have been murdered and/or raped during the past 10 years. Many of these women are still missing. More frightening is the fact that not one of these murder cases has resulted in a single conviction.

Making the informed decision

·

Dear Fellow Students: We feel the need to respond to recent campaign promises and activities that have been making a mockery of IUSA as an institution and of the student body in Bloomington during the past month.

Vote 'you' for IUSA

·

When I asked IU Student Association Election Coordinator Derek Molter if there would be a "none of the above" option in tomorrow's IUSA election, he told me there wouldn't be.

Blogging democracy

·

There's really nothing quite like a LiveJournal for providing a few precious minutes of homework distraction. Sadly, online journaling will be forever tainted by the stereotype of the angsty 14-year-old blogger who posts bad goth poetry, whines about love or spews a bunch of gibberish like, "omfg, d00d, counterstrike r00lz0r."

State remembers Muncie-Milan game

·

MUNCIE -- For one incredible evening of noise and nostalgia, this was the way Indiana high school basketball used to be. The Muncie Fieldhouse rocked in opposing seas of purple and black Saturday night. It was Milan and Muncie Central once again -- the small-town, country kids against the big boys from the city played in front of a Who's Who of Indiana basketball past and present and a national television audience.

'Shape Note' right on key

·

The Civil War epic "Cold Mountain" has helped to expose the world to a unique choral arrangement known as Shape Note or Sacred Heart singing. This is not the sound of a by-gone era, but vibrant music that continues to thrive around the country, including Bloomington. Shape Note singing is performed without instruments, with songs arranged in three or four-part harmony.

·

The WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Consumer advocate Ralph Nader announced Sunday he is again running for president, this time as an independent, and rejected claims a longshot candidacy would merely siphon enough votes from the Democrats to ensure President Bush's reelection.
