The Cinderella of the arts: BALLET

At an Oct. 5 rehearsal at the Musical Arts Center, ballet dancers in spandex pants, leotards and sweatshirts helped move the velvet railing from the front of the stage before beginning one of their last rehearsals before the Fall Ballet, "Through a Looking Glass." A few days later, these dancers would be dressed in Spanish-style tutus and colorful leotards, bathed in the colorful MAC stage lights, performing in front of ballet fans, friends and family. But for the time, they were still preparing for the first show of the season in a way their teacher, former prima ballerina Violette Verdy, said exhibited all their good qualities.

HPER offers inexpensive, fun dance classes for non-majors

As a student at IU, finding interesting and fun classes to take might be a difficult venture. Because students are expected to declare a major by the second semester of their sophomore year and must take classes that fulfill particular requirements, finding fun, low-credit courses can be a challenging task. But the different variety of dance classes offered through the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation achieves the "fun" requirement for the four-year plan.

Famous quartet to perform Bartok The world-famous Borromeo Quartet will perform a musical marathon this weekend when it takes on all six of Bartok's string quartets in a single concert, a feat few groups have attempted. The Borromeo Quartet is cutting edge within the classical music industry in that it keeps a living archive. This is common among rock bands, but practically non-existent with classical groups. The group records each concert it performs on CD and DVD for its living archive.

Musical performance explores Silk Road culture

An ensemble of nine international artists will use the music and dance of Central Eurasia to promote a positive image of their culture this weekend. The Silk Road Ensemble will perform at Buskirk-Chumley Theater as part of the Central Eurasian Studies Society conference which is expected to attract hundreds of international scholars and artists to IU.

U.S. romps Panama in World Cup qualifier

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Established star Landon Donovan and rising sensation Eddie Johnson carried the United States into the regional qualifying finals for the 2006 World Cup in emphatic fashion Wednesday night. Donovan scored the first two goals, then Johnson, a second-half substitute, got three in a row in a 6-0 rout of Panama. It was the first U.S. hat trick in World Cup qualifying since 1968 and only the third ever.

Orton nearly gets sacked by his classwork, Penn State

Professors were as much the cause of Kyle Orton's first off game as pass rushers and defensive backs. The Purdue quarterback went through the first four games without throwing an interception. Then came a difficult week of tests and papers in class -- and a tough Penn State defense -- and the result was a rather ordinary day for Orton in Purdue's 20-13 win Saturday. "The thing about college is, when you have a test, you have four tests," Orton said. "It was a tough week last week, mainly because of academics. ... It's funny, all the professors seem to save the tests for the same week." Orton had to write an English paper and take tests in history and also Race and Gender, all while preparing for a road game at raucous Beaver Stadium. "It was very demanding," coach Joe Tiller said. "He had a very challenging week, but didn't let on. He really subscribes to the theory, 'never show weakness.'"

Movement theater comes to Waldron

Modern dance and improvisational movement meet theater this weekend in the Bloomington Area Arts Council and Meg Anderson co-production of "Waves." "Waves" centers around Jill, a woman sitting in a café who shares stories of a vision quest. As this vision quest becomes realized through dialogue, movement, lighting and flashbacks, Jill delves into a dream world where she confronts her demons and emerges stronger.

Yankees 3, Red Sox 1 NEW YORK -- Pedro Martinez has a new "Daddy." His name is Jon Lieber. While the raucous crowd at Yankee Stadium taunted Martinez with booming chants of "Who's Your Daddy?" Lieber shut down the highest-scoring offense in the major leagues.

IUSA to warn students of 'Quiet Night's ordinance'

The IU Student Association members will be going around to various student off-campus residences, handing out information regarding the City of Bloomington's "Quiet Nights" initiative. The initiative is a city-wide ordinance, requiring residents to curb noise coming from their home. The ordinance allows police to investigate any noise complaint between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., giving tenants a $50 fine.

New Latin dance club goes into full swing

IU students can be "livin' la vida loca" at school with the recently founded Latin Dance Club. The club, which had its first call-out meeting Sept. 30, is meeting for its first official practice tonight. The club had a great turnout for its call-out meeting and currently has 160 people on its e-mail list.

INPIRG weighs in on waste

As students finished their meals in Wright food court Wednesday night, they rushed to dump their leftovers in trash bins and hardly noticed the banner on the wall that asked, "How much do you waste?" Each of the bins had been labeled either, "Compost," "Trash" or "Recycle," but most paid them no attention and threw their waste into the closest bin. "We're doing research for INPIRG," senior Vanessa Caruso said "if you could just separate your trash."

Studying into the past, that's something we can all profit by." These were the words of an artist. They were the first words he offered to a class studying modern art. Yet for the benefit of all, it might behoove us to consider them in a broader context. Slowly making his way to a small seat at the head of a conference table on the third floor of the IU Art Museum, painter Robert Colescott struggled with those words, but not the ideas.

Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Howie Day and Nickel Creek concert, and I've decided that's the way to go. What are you talking about "that's the way to go?" Eat slow, live well, savor life

In a country super-saturated with fast food restaurants, political science professor Christine Barbour is striking out on her own and heading up a community chapter of a national response to the fast food dominance: the 'Slow Food' movement. It's a movement emphasizing pleasurable and seasonal eating, a community connection to local growers and producers, and a generally more harmonious life. And in order to bring the Slow Food movement and its way of life to the community at whole, Barbour is helping to sponsor a block-party style event this Sunday, appropriately titled "Slow Fest."

I got a wake-up call Tuesday night, and in the most interesting of ways. I was forced to remember that appearances can be quite deceiving. There I was at home, watching Cartoon Network and writing a song when a friend sent me an instant message. "You watching Cartoon Network?" she asked.
