Taking culture for granted

It took a trip to Spain to realize all the cultural things I never knew I take for granted. I was lied to. I was only mildly warned of the men of this country. A fellow Indiana Daily Student employee who studied in Salamanca over the summer (she shall remain nameless) had forewarned me. She then assured me that men in Spain are like men anywhere else. "You know how when you walk down the street and pass construction men and they whistle at you? It's the same thing."

IU outruns Minnesota for 30-21 win

Things were looking scary for IU's football team following Saturday's first quarter. The Hoosiers fell behind 14-0 to No. 24 Minnesota in front of a Homecoming crowd at Memorial Stadium. But then the Hoosiers put on the mask of the team that started the season 2-0, and treated the crowd to a 30-21 upset win against the Golden Gophers.

Women's swim and dive falls to ASU Saturday, the No. 17 ranked IU women's swimming and diving team took on No. 21 Arizona State University in Bloomington at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. After going through a shortened meet of only 16 events, the Hoosiers fell to the Sun Devils, 156.5-142.5.

It took two goals by freshman Frederique Meeuwsen to give the Hoosiers their first Big Ten win, 3-1 versus Ohio State.

PITTSBURGH -- So much for the longest winning streaks in NFL history. Ben Roethlisberger drove the Steelers to four scores following uncharacteristic New England turnovers and Pittsburgh ended the Patriots' two long winning streaks with a remarkably easy 34-20 victory Sunday.

Hoosiers give lone senior 1 last win at home, 4-0

The only senior on the IU women's soccer team couldn't have asked for a better senior night. When IU battled Butler University Friday night, senior midfielder Kim Grodek scored two goals and tallied an assist en route to a 4-0 Hoosier victory.

Peterson's shot grants IU victory

ST. LOUIS -- Struggling to make things happen for No. 8 IU (13-3-1 overall), sophomore forward Jacob Peterson's play versus St. Louis University (8-7-1 overall) secured the victory for the Hoosiers. IU won 2-1 in overtime in front of 3,317 fans on Halloween at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Peterson's shot in overtime bounced off a defender and into the goal, giving IU the win.

Gall places 3rd as team finishes 5th in meet

The IU women's cross country team finished fifth this weekend at the Big Ten Championships at the University of Iowa. Iowa held the meet at its newly dedicated Ashton Cross Country course. The six-kilometer event featured four nationally ranked top-30 teams, including the Hoosiers.

While IU students slowly awoke from Halloween weekend in Bloomington, the IU men's cross country team toed the line at the Big Ten Championships at the University of Iowa.

The winds of change?

The strong wind you felt Saturday was a result of the changing season, but it was also a collective sigh of relief that came from Gerry DiNardo and his coaching staff on the heels of the Hoosiers' first Big Ten victory this season. The win was the Hoosiers' second victory over a ranked team this season, and the last time the Hoosiers beat two ranked teams in one season was when the team defeated Michigan and Ohio State in 1987.

Seven thousand college students across Indiana are registered to vote for the first time this election, and 2,500 of them are from IU, according to The Associated Press, which reports that college students are traditionally the least likely to vote.
