Shenanigans in the sunshine

With the election 24 hours away, Florida needs to get with it

Picture it: Florida, 2000. The last presidential election threw Florida a curveball; The accusations flew, mud was slung and America had to wait five weeks to find out who would be the next president.\nPicture it: Florida, 2004. The BBC has reported that in Broward County, FL, roughly 60,000 absentee ballots have gone missing or were never mailed out. The executive director of the Bush campaign is being accused of sending out an e-mail containing a 15-page list of voters who live in traditionally black and Democrat areas. The Associated Press has reported that Florida law is going to allow ballots cast by now-dead voters to count. \nIs anybody seeing any parallels?\nOur point? It seems that the Sunshine State needs to get its act together. Its history is shady enough, but they've had four years to get things figured out. \nDon't get us wrong; it's not a job we'd want to do. It's difficult. But it seems to be pretty important, seeing as how Florida is a swing state and has a population of around 16 million people. It should probably be pretty high on the state list of priorities. \nThey have 24 hours to do it, and while it doesn't seem likely, we're college students. We're allowed to be idealistic. Here at the Indiana Daily Student, we're hoping for a smooth, glitch-free election in the Land of Retirees.
